Default Hello All!

Hi everyone!
I just recently purchased my 1984 Corvette and BOY do I love it!

It still feels weird to say "I own a corvette" but I think I'll get used to it

I just had a quick question for ya, I was planning on doing a couple quick mods here soon and one of them was putting in a new thermostat. I cant really decide on what temp thermostat would be best and I was also thinking of putting in a new fan switch.

Any ideas?

use a 180* stat and get a new fan switch that lowers the temps the fans come on at.

That's the trick!

I think Ecklers sells those fan switches.

Well first off welcome!! Now on to your question, I personally like the cooler t-stat and switch combo. Some say it causes the engine to wear quicker I just dont know. In my experience it does make my car about one tenth of a second quicker when racing and can leave the line at 160-165 vs. 185-195 range. The wear issue has not been a big concern to me as I only get to drive it about 2000 miles a year due to my work.

I run a 160deg T-stat year around with good results but my '88 is a TPI so it has a dry intake.

Your '84 is throttle body injecton with a wet intake so I'm not sure if lower temps would have a detremental effect on the fuel dropping out within the intake manifold.

You might want to post this question with the CFI guys.

the 88 TPI is dry? I thought all TPIs were wet intakes? Did you mod yours?

He was referring to dry as there is no Air/Fuel mixture in the plenum/ runners. The the CFI injects at the TB, and there is air/fuel mixture in the intake...

I'd replace the thermostat with the same temp it came from the factory with. Our cars are meant to run at certain temps for emissions purposes. Putting something else in it might screw with something.

The stock stat is 195°. Don't consider one less that 180°, unless you have a GOOD reason to do so and fully understand the consequences. Since you ask, I assume you don't.

A switch that turns the fan on at about 215° would be about right, certainly no lower than about 205°.

Since the car is new to you, you probably don't know what maintenace it has had. This would be a good time to thoroughly flush the cooling system and change the coolant. While you're at it, pull the upper radiator shroud off and clean out the debris that accumulates between the radiator and the condenser.

Welcome to the forum and enjoy your "new" car.

Welcome to the forum and congrads on your new vette

People here really like to share their knowledge here so always ask away.

In my view the first thing that you should do for your vette is change ALL the fluids oil, trany, dif ...... then get in your car and put 1,000 miles on it over a weekend (you can do it, believe me) That way you'll get to know the "feel" of your car.

At risk of getting called a lulu again, I'll say that there are studies showing there is an optium temp. for performance and minimize engine wear. You don't need your car to run at 225° for hours and hours to clean the oil. With the lower stat the car temp. will climb at stop lights and such. I switched my car from a 195° stat to a 180° and she'll run about 186° now. With a oil temp. of 191°. The reason I switched was to bring the oil temp. down some. And it worked. I will probably put in a manual fan switch for cooling at the track and leave the computer fan settings at stock.

With a cooler stat, the car takes longer to warm up to operating temperature. With only short trips, the car may never fully warm up or spend enough time warmed up. It would be better for it to run at 225° for hours on end, then to never reach a proper operating temperature.

i have a 84 vette(not a CF). i ran the 160 and today have a 180 in car. i ran 185-195 today and air was 70F. fan comes on 199. when weather real cool the 160 stat will run car 165-170 and i believe that too cool. in fact i think it caused me to drop out of overdrive occasionally and that was not good. also my 160 did not allow car to run cooler in warm temps. still ran up to 195-200 due to inadequate cooling system. also car may not get to CL operation if running low 160's. i think my CL is about 166 deg.

Know barely anything about Crossfires, but welcome to the forum! Don't have too much fun... Cops get mad and often look down on Corvette owners, especially here in Central FL!

Hey, you all know more about corvettes than I and I will welcome any feedback with open arms. Lucky for me there is someone close to where I live who fiddles with Crossfires day in and day out, talk about lucking out!

As for the cops, I ONLY purchased this car because of my clean driving record, untill recently when a bicyclist cut me off and I got a ticket for wreckless driving (that I'm pleaing "not guilty" to.). I've been pulled over 4 times in the month I've had this car, 2 times by the same cop for my temp tag being in the wrong place even tho the DMV said otherwise (I threatened to press charges if he harassed me again and he hasn't bothered me since) and again for my headlight motor (the prev owner wore it out right before I bought it)

ANYWAYS, thank you all for your input and I'll take it into consideration!
