Lucas Oil stopped knocking at startup! so what does that mean?
after having this problem

my mechanic told me that I might have made a flat spot on my crank when a buddy dropped a bolt into the intake and then tried to start it.
so my mechanic told me to try some Lucas oil stabilizer and that might clear up the knock at startup. so I added it and drove it for about an hour and since then (3 days) I have not had any kind of knock at startup and it seems to run smoother 
. My oil pressure at startup (according to my dash) is around 50 whereas before it was around 30.
my only question is if Lucas did fix the problem what is the problem?

Why bother since you live in Alabama? The 5 would just be during winter. The're both 30 weight once at operating temps. I wonder if using some 40 weight would help with the issue.

It is much like Wynn's Friction Proofing in the old days or STP oil treatment. Seems like they are thicker than regular oil and raise oil pressure for maybe a thousand miles or so until they get weak and the regular pressure returns. Used the stuff in the old days on a Dodge I had. Sounds like you got a rod bearing knock IMHO from what you said. Thick stuff you added is quieting it down for a while but unfortunatley I bet it returns.

lucas is good stuff! it stays at the top of the motor longer then any thing. 5w-30 is to low, i would go back to 10w-30. how did you drop a bolt in the intake?? dam!!!
i had a 97 astro van with 99K and it started to knock bad, lost coolant some were, dealer had no idea if it was the head or what??? morons with equipment?? well got it home put 20w-50 and some lucas in no more knock and sold it to car max!!

They're all the same crap, nothing new. If this quieted your engine, you still have worn bearings. The noise will show up again eventually. Oh, and ask your mechanic how dropping a bolt into the intake would cause a "flat spot" on the crank. Then find a new mechanic.....

It seems you have 2 choices
1.Drive it till it blows
2.Get it fixed(it will be cheaper if you do #2 than #1)
You need to face the facts there is no rebuild in a can only a temporary band-ade.What you read above is true it won't last it is not fixed.Hate to be blunt but it seems you do not want to hear what is being said here.

I wish there was a little wore info on Lucas but everone seems to have good luck with it. By the way Redeasysport,whats that fabbed up intake all about thats in your pics?

nah the bolt was my fault, my "buddy" dropped it in while we were swapping in my super ram
my mechanic fixed the hole and found the bolt
I dont plan on driving it till it blows but I need to get as much out of it as I can

I've been following your threads on your predicament. I would be tearing that engine down asap. If you had a bolt punch a hole in the head then you have done damage to either the rod or piston and that is probably where the knocking is coming from. At least it's almost winter and time to put it away. I feel for you on this, I had it happen to me when I was 17 years old and somebody intentionally dropped a small pipe plug in the intake port of the head while I was swapping manifolds. It didn't even start, turned over, fired and shot flame about 6 feet in the air out of the carb and was locked up with a broken piston and a hole in the cylinder. Never did find the sob who did it.

I thought about that but I just graduated and I don't have the funds right now to tear it down. In Alabama there is not much of a winter so there is no real put it away time, it is my DD. My plan is to eventually rebuild it as a 383, but that (hopefully) is some time off. How serious do you think the damage is?

if your "buddy" put you through this, take it from his hide. he owes you big time. you should not be left to have to keep worrying; he's the one who should be worrying every minute, until paid up.
