How many shifter boots for the ZF6?
I'm putting a ZF in my 85. It has the rubber boot over the shift linkage, looks like it used to be ziptied originally.
There's no boot on the top of the trans around the shifter, I've seen this on photos of other's on ebay. Is that the only other shift boot needed?
Or is there something else to keep the tranny tunnel on the car sealed besides the upper leather boot?

Nope, no other boot, but I did buy a Hurst Bellows type boot for an every day Hurst shifter and slide it over the shifter to take up space around the tunnel hole opening I cut to prevent air and heat from coming into the console.

I'm not clear on what you found, but I would explain it as there are 3 boots.
From bottom-up,
1. there is a very pliable rubber 'gear shift boot', it's large and wraps/sits around the shifter linkage and slips over the front/rear mounting/pivot points and completely encases the shifter linkage preventing road dirt intrusion. It is kept in place by 2 plastic 'wire ties'.
2. There is a rubber 'upper boot', which sits over the 'lower boot', and may sit over or under the shifter's metal cover (don't remember -- with 4 nuts on the top). This 'upper boot' sits up against the tunnel hole, but is not attached to the car (to my memory), to further hold heat/road dirt from getting in under the shifter console.
3. Lastly, there is the decorative 'leather boot' which is part of the 'shifter console cover', and is attached to the underside of the 'console cover', requiring the shifter-**** be removed to install.
Hope this helps...
BTW, the reason I know all this is that on our 94 LT1 Coupe ZF 6-speed, previous owners/stupid mechanics had either changed the shifter or removed it during numerous transmission removals and never re-installed the 'lower gear shift boot', resulting in one really dirty/sticky/stiff shifter (all for the wrong oil leak seal replacement -- stupidly replacing rear-main instead of tranny input seal).
Hope this helps...
