I was working on a leak on my power steering last night and I dropped a tool into the engine compartment and had to jack up the car to retrieve it.
When I got under the car I discovered that my headers were actually in contact with my oil filter? Actually just a few millimeters away... This can't be right. The header are Hooker Super competitions and my car is a 94 LT-1 Coupe with a 6 speed. Anyone know about this? The headers were on the car when I purchased it.
It is not a desirable situation. The primary will
radiate/conduct heat to the canister and that oil
is destined for the galleys.
How long is the filter. There are at least two
or more sizes. If the previous owner started
using one of the longer styles, then you might
regain some clearance by switching back.
Otherwise, the options are limited. Short of
dimpling the offending primary, you can forget
about moving it much.
Though there doesn't sound like there is sufficient
room as is, if you gain some space, Thermo Tech
and DEI make various heat shield wraps you can
use to insulate the primaries and filter from each
other.
Get the car up on a service hoist get a couple of your buddies to hold the car still while you pry the offending pipes away from the filter with a wood block and a big pry bar, use the wood block to protect the pipe. it may be nessasary to remove the filter but you can use the corner of the cylinder block as a point to pry against this type of thing is by no means very scientific but can be done without to much trouble.A good custom muffler shop should have no trouble doing this for you if you dont have a buddy that has a hoist.
