Default I have the water pump killed my opti-crap blues... :'(

Well, I got the tranny fulid flushed and filter changed, also changed the oil to 15w50 and put a new oil filter on. On my way to the tranny dealer to have them diagnos it, i started getting VERY bad misses at any rpm above 2500 - 3000 or so. I took it straight home after the tranny shop and talked with a few guys... then I checked... :( my waterpump has started leaking (or has been maybe) and has killed my opti-crap. It sounds like pop-corn under the hood when I revv it up around 3k. Here goes some more money I didn't want to spend on the vette in this way... It is only doing this when it's hot, which everyone says is a give-away about the opti-crap..... did I mention that GM engineer's SUCK ****! :boxing

Glockster, ok, here's the deal. Just replaced my waterpump (LT-1). Come to find out, it probably wasn't the pump, but a hose that gave me the pitch a fit, don't run for three weeks blues. Anyway, I got this pump, it spins very evenly. I don't think it is bad. Even has a 180 F termo which I replaced earlier this year. Doesn't have a sensor, as I buggered it when I took it out. It's yours for the price of shipping. You'll need gaskets and the sensor. Everything else is there. A little dirty, I figure you can fix that. I'm not cleaning it up. If this interests you give a reply. If not, and you want to get a new pump, contact Jeff Komp. (His forum name is 18carfan). The man will treat you right. Priced the pump from a local dealer, $290. The catalogs wanted $240. Jeff delivered it to my door for $155 and change. Good man, ADDelco. Second time I bought from him...Will do it again. Hope this helps.

http://www.paceparts.com has good prices on opti-craps. Unfortunately, the ones that suck 92-94 cost more than the new ones. This is one time when GM should give us a break. I got my waterpump from NAPA with a lifetime warranty. It was about 175.00. Too bad you can't get that on the opti.

Hmm.. $175 and a lifetime warranty. I wonder what kind of warranty the ones from the dealer come with

As I replied just a minute ago to another message, check out : http://members.home.net/jreed012/optispark.html

I documented swaping your opti over to a vented opti. While a lot of the information is similar to the Corvette Fever article, I have done things a little different. In any case, you'll find the part numbers, etc. on this page.

why hasnt someone manufactured some kind of metal plate that bolts in between the pump and opticrap to make the run off flow to the ground instead. im sure it wouldnt be that hard to make.

Glock, I just replaced my Optispark a few weeks ago. Turned out that it wasn't the problem, it was my plugs and wires. If you're seriously on a budget, I'll sell it to you for $40 plus shipping.

There is, of course, a catch. It's obviously used, and since I bought the car itself used I don't know how much life it has left. I cannot vouch for it's performance, only that it worked fine when I took it off.

Because of the time required to change it (about 6 hours), I recommend you get a new one so you don't have to do the repair twice. But if you don't have the $400 right now and it's the difference between driving your car or waiting until you have the cash, it might be worth your while.

I was going to keep it in case the new one ever went on the fritz, but it's not a big enough deal that I keep it if it would help you out.

I have found a new one for a good price, assuming the deal goes through, so I'll be ok. I want a new one in anyway since I would prefer to not have to dig into here again.

Anyway.. here are some pics.. one of the waterpump and one of the optispark as it sits right now (haven't undone the harmonic balancer bolts to get it out)

It is very easy to see that it had been slowly leaking because of the build up of dirt and grime all around the pump.

Notice the dirt and grime around the edges of the optispark, and the moisture spots around the wires.

I just sold my 94 Z28. I bought an extra opti and water pump from Jeff Kopp about two months ago, and I have not even opened the boxes.

I think they will work for a 94 Vette.

May need to confirm that.

I would sell them both for $400 plus shipping.

Curtis,

In the water pump pic, there's a brass-colored hex fitting on the lower left for one of the hoses. Did your new water pump come with that fitting? I bought a new one from Jeff Kopp, but didn't get that fitting, so I wonder if I should be reusing my old one...

Thanks.

That fitting is just the Coolant Temp. sensor. They are about $15 at an autoparts store. Depending on how old yours is, I would go ahead and replace it. Mine is only about 2 months old, so it's going on the new one.

Andymi: I might be very interested in your opti and pump if a deal right now doesn't go through. I will let you know shortly.

I was lucky - My power steering started slipping with the first drop from the pump.
I don't like replacing the pump but it is MUCH better than pump and opti.

Here are some more pics for you guys that like to see what's goin' on. I now have the optispark pulled out and the wires pulled out as well. I am going to replace the 7mm ACDelco wires with either some MSD 8.5mm or something equivalent.

After I took out the opti.

The Opti-CRAP by itself.

After some clean up work around the timing cover area (and some VERY tough work getting those stupid water pump gaskets off!)

kinda makes you wonder why in the world GM put the engine spark right under the water pump that they knew would eventually leak after normal wear and tear. i bet it had something to do with them knowing they would make more cash off of it:mad
