New to forum, Same old Opti-Crap
Okay guys, new to forum, just found it this evening and need help.
My car runs whenever it feels like it, but mostly does nothing. Finally got time to work on it this week, found what I thought to be the problem, found this forum, and am now really concerned.
Here goes. Most of the time when I crank on the car it does nothing. Sometimes it seems like it’s firing on only a few cylinders, and sometimes it actually starts up and runs. Well during a convenient period when it did nothing, I checked out the spark from the coil and it is firing well. When I checked the spark at the plug I got nothing. I checked this a few times back and forth, coil then plug, spark at coil—nothing at plug.
Well, I ripped out the “Opti-Crap”, and took off the cap and it was severely corroded. I drove over to the GM garage and them idiots wanted over three hundred bucks for a cap and rotor, and over seven hundred bucks for a new Opti-Crap. Well, I left there and went to the part store and ordered a AC Delco cap and rotor for two hundred fifty bucks. It’s supposed to come tomorrow.
Well I got home and cleaned of my motor and all of the parts really good and decided to search the Net on the subject. Well, I found this site and I now wonder if I made a mistake by ordering the cap and rotor and not getting a new Opti-Crap.
The way I figure it, the coil is firing, so the computer has to be giving a signal to fire it, which in turn has to be getting a signal from the Opti-Crap.
Am I being stupid by going only with a cap and rotor?
Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

I would bet the rest of it does not look to well also. Mine looked just a little rusty, but ran like crap!
Change the whole thing and vent it as described in the recent Corvette Fever.

Everything you need to know for changing it out is here :
http://members.home.net/jreed012/optispark.html
While it's still in the rough draft stages, it will walk you through the cheapest method to replace and vent your optispark. Also, it's much cleaner and more factory looking than the Corvette Fever article. I did it on mine 3 months ago, and so far it's run flawlessly.

I recently bought an optispark and waterpump from Jeff Kopp for my 94 Z28.
I sold the Z yesterday, and I never took the opti or the waterpump out of their boxes.
I am going to list in the parts section if you are interested.

Welcome to the forum!
You've breathed some new life into the opticrap... however, the bearings are only good for about 80k miles anyway, on average.
Beyond that they get hot, warp the shaft, and retard your spark.
I bought a complete new optispark for about $350. Try http://www.tld-corvette.com next time.
