5th & 6th gear whining noise?
I have a '94 6spd and it mankes a high pitched whining noise when I lift in 5th or 6th gear. Is this normal? 5th and 6th gear only.

I have a similar whine between 63 and 75mph, on my '96 LT4. There is no whine at other speeds. I believe it is getting louder and seems to be coming from behind the seats, so I believe it's from the differential. I am at 14000 miles now and am about ready to take this to the dealer. Let me know what you find out.

I get whining too--I think it comes from the rear diff. Normal, so they say. I actually get it at all speeds, but it's loudest and most obvious on the freeway when you can hear it over the engine noise.
OTOH if the noise is gradually getting louder, there could be a problem.

I have a 90 6sp, i wish it only whined in 5th and 6th. Mine whines in all gears... but it is louder in 1st and then gets quieter as i go through the gears. I'm sure it's the gearbox as it stops when i push the clutch in. I was told it is the bearings in the ZF. The noise seems to get quieter when i think about how much it may cost to repair !!

I first noticed the whine (63-75mph) only when windows were up. That was about the 8500 mile point. My drivetrain is quiet at other speeds, except for slight whining that I have heard in other manual trans cars.
I believe the noise has increased because I now notice it when windows are down. Unfortunately, mine only occurs at normal highway speeds where I do most of my driving, so it is becoming an obnoxious sound to me. Dealer's comment about 2000 miles ago was to change fluids, which I did in both the Tranny and Rear End. Of course I used the GM recommended fluids and additive. The fluid change had no noticeable effect. Fortunately, the car is still under warranty, but I'm being cautious cause I really don't want the mechanic tearing into my car unless it's necessary. Hence, I'm interested in the experiences of the others. Thanks.
