Hi TNT,
for a 256 k EPROM chip in the Chicago area... when I used to live in Elk Grove Village, I would buy them in bulk from a company called Marshall Electronics... I think they were in Schaumburg.
Some radio shacks will have them I think.... but definitely not all.
good luck

I don't know about local stores that would stock them. Radio Shack is the only one that would come to mind.... there is a big electronics store in Fort Worth called Fry's that does have eproms, but they only have a few locations on the west coast and here. Mail order you can get just about any used eprom from Astro Marketing in Florida for about a dollar each plus a stupid huge shipping charge. Here's an old email I saved:

Try Astro Marketing in Melbourne, Florida ***area code changed to 321*** (407)727-8817

I haven't called them in a while, I think the 321 area code is what you need to use....

your local radio shack sounds like mine. got some real geniuses working up there. makes you wonder how they got the job in the first place. i went to my local one to find a 256 28 pin eprom too, and they looked at me like i was crazy when i told em what i wanted. all they could do was look at me with a stupid look and tell me "ummm, i dont know if we have that sir"

Try http://www.digikey.com or http://www.mouser.com. They carry everything.
When I was 18 (1985) I worked for Radio Shack for a year (as I went to school earning my BS in Electronic Engineering). I was the only person in the whole district who had anything remotely resembling a clue. I've shopped there maybe three times in the last 15 years - and regretted it each time. Dig Teri Hatcher though...

Any of the DIP-28 versions they have in stock should work. The PLCC-32 is a square shape with pins on all 4 sides - won't work.
The only other difference I see it the access time in nanoseconds. I think the ECM only needs a 200ns chip, and everything Mouser has in stock is faster than that - so any of them should work.
My stock 88 only uses a 27128, does the 85 use a 256?
