I think you worry about what we think too much.

Do what makes you happy.

AS YOU CAN SEE THE QUESTION IS WHY THE BIG DISCREPINCY IN WHAT PEOPLE THINK!! NOT WHAT DO YOU DRIVE AROUND TOWN IN!!
If you really want to know [U]why[U] there is a discrepancy, I doubt you will ever know. People drive they way the want to drive, the way they were historically taught to drive and then somewhere along the way...they are educated further in why they should change the way they drive.

As I stated in a prior post on a similiar topic and as another forum member explained much more clearly.......I used to drive in OD until I spent over $3000 last year on a new transmission (+other misc repairs since the hummer was out and the car in the air). At that time the mechanic "educated" me on the pitfalls of driving in OD all the time and the potential wear and tear on the parts.

Since I did not (and still don't) have the knowlege or equipment to R-R-R my tranny myself and I don't want to have to do it again, I have changed my driving habits, in hopes that what he says is true and I won't have to.

I think LuVettes hit upon the reason for this variation, and others, in driving habits. Most driving technique is due to initial training/learning with changes that come from experience/knowledge.

From recent related posts I am more concious of doing a manual downshift from OD before accelerating on the streets. I still drive mostly in OD, unless it's "time to play in traffic" and then I like to run through the gears manually.

I don't like to lug the motor any more than I have to. I like to keep up enough R's to keep a little higher oil pressure, coolant flowing, A/C spinning faster, etc. If I look down and I'm only turning 1200 or so, I'll bump down a gear to the fluids movin'. Just my preference on how I drive. Besides, I get a heck of a resonance inside the car at low rpm.... I guess that doesn't answer if it's harmful on the tranny either way though.

Later,

Carl :chevy

Asking the same question multiple timres isn't going to resolve any discrepincy! It will only lead to the same people telling you what they prefer! Do what makes your car drive the best!

I've got 3.73s in my car, & see no need to leave in in D it would be over 2500 99% of the time.. I just leave it in OD...& even then it never "lugs"

It's generally considered poor conduct on Message Boards to go from section to section "duplicating" your posts.

I'm sure 99% of people who use C4 Tech board also use C4 general discussion, so you really only need to ask it in 1 place... whether it's a "general" question, or a "technical question."

I have driven my automatic 4 speeds around town in Overdrive. It can be annoying if you live in a hilly area like Atlanta because the transmission locks and unlocks at the wrong time. Some people probably get fed up with that and just use Drive. If you live in flat country like Florida, OD works fine.

I just drive my car in reverse all the time, that way I don't wear out ANY of the forward clutches.

I've found the reverse thing works real well for keeping the odometer low. :D
