Here's some pics of the completed engine;

Here's some tips on the harness changes for engine management changover;

modified my stock harness yesterday, it took a lot longer to trace everything than it did to do it. My 84 has a manual trans w/OD. There are a few items that are in the ECM harness that are for the IP Gages, these are:

1. Oil Pressure Sensor (there is an Oil Press Switch that is used to provide an alternate power path to the fuel pump, I did not remove this from the stock harness), the DFI can power the fuel pump and has it's own relay for the fuel pump. The pressure side of the sensor is required for gage, separate it to a permanent harness.

2. Speed Sensor (needed for speedometer). From the IP cluster it outputs back to the ECM for mileage calculations, you will have to give this up if you want another ECM or DFI.

3. Backup Switch (obviously you need this and it does not tie in to the ECM.)

The trans OD relay (can be made to operate off the console switch exclusively).

A late model ECM and harness for your type of tranny will be able to patch into everything as long as the device connectors are correct or changed.

In my case, I wanted to only have one ECM (DFI), so I made the 3 items above into a separate harness to permanently connect them since they have nothing to do with the ECM.

We have emissions here so I have kept my stock engine (still disassembled) and ECM/harness intact in case I need them to pass emissions next year. That's the failsafe plan, in the mean time I will look for a late model ECM/harness to control emissions by early next year. Maybe the weatherproof model, I'm still checking this out. All the changes I'm making in regards to the ECM and harness are reversible.

In the mean time, I'll be running a 383 Superam Engine with no emissions and controlled by Accel DFI between emissions testing every 2 years until the car is 20 years old then it's not req'd.

:cheers:

I wish I could get my SR to shine that well. What did you do to polish it? Have you done any mods to the 4+3 to handle all the extra torque?

Mark,

I just completed my 861/2 Z51 with a L383 package. The fun is just beginning. To complete my package I ordered a Fastchip from Ed Wright to link the L383 hardware with the ECM-165. The chip was okay but didn't give the engine everything it needed. So I broke down and purchased Diacom GM PLus, EEPROM Burner, and Tunercat Software to fill in the gaps. I recommend doing the same if you don't have access to someone who can hook you up....Heck I'm still making changes to my prom as we speak...

Happy viper hunting!

V/R,

Thanks guys, actually i'm Accel DFI, don't do the chip thing anymore. Someone mentioned the tranny, you gotta point, just stabbed it this weekend and question whether I'm doing the car justice by leaving the drivetrain stock. I think not, considering options, have always liked the 6 spd, maybe a Richmond conversion kit from Ecklers is in order. Haven't polished it yet, got the billet lid from Accel, just a smooth piece of steel, not what I expected in a billet lid, they didn't even chamfer the edges. Makes me want to polish the original and go with it.

:(

That is one good looking motor. It would be real hard for me to sleep at night with that engine sitting on the stand and not in the car. Looks great!
