Default TPS Drama....

My '85 has gone through 3 throttle position sensors in a little over a year and a half. Just got a call from DB Performance that the TPS is bad (and it was a AC Delco part) that I replaced not too long ago. What could be causing this? Anyone else have a similar experience out there? Any help would be appreciated. Trying to get her ready for the Cruise-In!

i went thru 2 of them (ac delco) in the last year myself. it was contributory to a faulty idle.

maybe this is a suck-azz part like the damn slave cylinders we all know and love.

Did it throw a code (21, 22) ? could be faulty connections, shorted sensor ground (dk. blue wire or gray), and or, ecm connection

either one of these could cause a TPS or any sensor to take a dump.

Yes, before I took it in for it's engine mods, I got a code 22, with the new Delco TPS. Frustrating.

yes, codes and a visual check are the first to do......in my case the sensors themselves took dumps. this is just fyi.

I would also inspect throttle and linkage to see if it is hanging up in anyway
It will throw a 22 (low voltage)if the volts are less than .24. If that's set between .54 -.62. An open or short in the blue or grey wire will throw a 22.
I would begin with the weather pack connection, good clean connection etc. Get a VOHM meter it is easy to check. Disconnect sensor, jump the blue and gray wire should give over 4. volt. If not check blue wire for signal w/test light to battery power should show 4. volts. If yes, grey wire open or shoted to ground, connector or faulty ecm. If no, blue is shorted to sensor ground circuit (tps, cts, oil temp, all on same ecm ground, black wire) faulty ecm connection or ecm.

Usually it holds the TB blade open, when vac. decreases closes. It could also be sucking air in, either way raisng idle. The tps will increase its reading as the throttle angle is increased.
The TPS should be set static w/engine off (0% throttle angle), key on. If it were the shaft/bushing, I would suspect a higher v.reading (possibly code 21). Visual is still good, as kinkage, cable etc. may be held up or sticking at static position. Then being set to .54, and after car runs drops below.24 is possible.

It makes it a little hard for me to believe that 3 TPS sensors would go bad with a properly working circiut or connections. Maybe..1 but 3... no. IMO I would check the connections TPS and ECM or circuit for being grounded, thus frying the TPS sensor.

Don't shoot the messenger. It sounds as though people have been bandaging symptoms rather than diagnosing and treating the disease (cause).

RACE ON!!!

.... and then there is my TPS that has been cracked, new hole tapped after breaking the corner off and the whole thing is kind of rigged on, yet it runs perfectly
