Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (black bart)
I've had the Hurst in for three weeks now. No problems, shifts are clean and tight. Shifter is about 1.25" shorter than stock. Very comfortable to shift and drive. For pics goto http://hometown.aol.com/grbngrs2/HurstInstall.html
If red X's in box appear, right click on x and click "show picture". BTW this is what GM should have put in! I love it. :D :D

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (Fang S-289)
The Hurst shifter is very nice; I've had it about a week now and believe it is a great modification for $129.00. My mechanic charged me about $100 labor for the install.......
There is no "sloppyness" with this shifter; tight and precise. The Ripper was a little too notchy for me (on a friends '96), so I waited for the Hurst.
You won't be disappointed.

I personally like the notchiness of the B&M Ripper shifter. A lot of them tend to rattle though, mine does not. Nothing like the quick short shifts of a ripper. I find the Hurst still a little too long of throw, but it is definately an improvement over stock.

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (Vette92)
I like the short, notchy throw and the WIDE SHIFT GATE of the Ripper. My friend has the Hurst in his 2001 F-Body and its still kind of a long throw (with a very narrow gate which I absolutely hate). The 6-speed can be a confusing transmission to drive and a narrow gate only makes it worse. And if you don't find the 6-speed confusing, then you don't do many triple digit corner entrances where your physical well being depends on catching that downshift. Its all to easy to assume 6th is 4th and screw up your downshift sequence when there is no margin left for error.
So, how is the Hurst compared to the Ripper? Long throw, yes, but is the Hurst shift gate narrow and confusing like it is on the F-Body?

I have the ripper and love it, tight as a drum.
It feels nice when you start to really hammer the gears. :smash:

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (Justin Scherer)
You cannot compare the Hurst for the ZF and the Hurst for the F-Body. They are not the same. Triple digit downshifts? Are you looking at the shifter at those speeds? As you know the ZF will goes to the 3-4 position via spring and you downshift from there. Try to find a Hurst equipped '89-'96 Vette in your area that you can take for a short drive, then get back to us. I'm interested in what you think.~~~

Looks like most of you like the billet plus. My main dislike of the stock shifter is not the long throw but twice while shifting from second to third i went from second to fifth need stronger spring on the gate. ?????????????

I've got to put a vote in for the ripper as well. You can get through just about every gear with a flick of the wrist.

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (89AusVette)
The only place that seems to have them in stock is Summit. I just ordered one and it was 136.xx including shipping. 129.xx for the shifter + shipping. Which is weird I thought shipping was free from summit?

Brad, You paid for handling, the shipping is free but they have to pay for someone to pack that sucker up. :D Are you putting it in yourself or having it installed? :smash: :smash:

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (jimbjr)
They get the money one way or another. Heck I happy that the shifter is only $130 and change. Normally anything for the vette is 2 to 3 times more than any other car.
I am going to install it myself. The tranny is hanging down now waiting for the new 383 to go in. So it should be a little easier than the normal install. I also installed the ripper when it came out and it wasn't that bad. The install that is The shifter was a piece of ####. IMHO
Thanks

What are we going to do about your Rustang in your sig? :nono: I got tired of waiting for the Hurst shifter. To those that installed it, did you have to remove the exhaust? I'm more interested in the 92 to 96 guys since I have an LT1 Corsa cat back on my car.

First, any comparison to shifters in other cars is meaningless, the transmissions and shifter designs are entirely different. Also, true evaluation of the shifters can only be done by experience, not by trying to imagine the throw length difference. But then of course finding all the aftermarket shifters to try out is not trivial either. Just something to keep in mind.
There are some who definitely prefer the B&M, but I don't understand how. In my experience the extremely short throw and high effort both make shifting very unfriendly. Like the B&M, the Hurst shifter reduces handle height by 1.25" and eliminates reverse lockout on '89-94. The Hurst reduces throw distance fore/aft and side-to-side by 30%. Since the reduction is the same on both axes, the aspect of the gates is retained, unlike the B&M which has a 30% reduction side-to-side and 60% reduction fore/aft, creating a square gate- a bad thing for fast shifting if you're trying to get a fluid motion. Physically, the B&M and Hurst both have the same sideways distance between gates, the difference is the fore/aft throw.
The minimal effort level and smoothness of the Hurst is unmatched. It utilizes
all factory parts except the stick itself and is as vibration free as
stock. Like the others it accepts the factory **** or any 9/16"-18 threaded ****.
Bart- your problem of going from 2nd to 5th will disappear with any aftermarket shifter. Any sideways reduction will increase the apparent tension in the shifter, making it feel like it you have stiffer springs.
Jason- Removing the exhaust is advised for the easiest installation. You can spend 10 minutes removing the exhaust or add 1 hour trying to work around it. With Corsa I was able to remove just the pipe on that side, with a little shifting of the rest of the exhaust system to pull it out. Here are the installation instructions-

Barnett Performance in Atlanta has it for $120 + $5 handling (free
shipping). Barnett can be reached at 800-533-1320. Barnett is currently
out of stock of them, but should have more in the near future as MrG. has
150 on the shelf. Jeg's and Summit both now offer it at $129.99 plus ~$9
handling. I am selling this unit myself as well, please email me privately for more info.

Re: What is the best shifter for ZF-6spd (black bart)
I DIDN'T SEE ANYONE TALK ABOUT THE KIRT WHITE SHIFTER THAT ALOT OF ZR-1 OWNERS USE.
I DON'T HAVE ONE, BUT WAS WONDERING WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF IT COMPARED TO THE RIPPER AND THE HURST.
SO FAR FROM THE COMMENTS I'D GO WITH THE HURST.

Guys,
Who wants a brand spanking new B&M Ripper Shifter for $120.00? Never used, still in the box with destructions, all packing etc.
I'm selling it because the destructions indicate that exhaust removal is necessary... I'm not planning on removing the exhaust till the next time a new clutch goes in... so... 1st come 1st serve... drop me an e-mail.
