Drivetrain/suspension noise...
We have a 93 Ruby Coupe, automatic, 2.59 rear. When at highway speed, there is a loud thumping noise, coming seemingly from the entire car, almost like a huge rock in a tire tread. It's in synch with the tire rotation, but it's intermittant. When starting from a stop, it will be a steady BAM BAM BAM, and the car will shake. It will either disappear while the car is moving, or it will be gone after the next stop. That's what is confusing me, the intermittant nature of the noise, and it doesn't sound like any other problem (wheel bearings, u-joints) that I've heard before. The car has 199,000 miles on it, we replaced half-shaft u-joints at about 160,000, drive shaft u-joints at about 180,000. Looking under the car, the half-shaft and drive shaft u-joints seem to be tight. It has Continental Extreme Contact 275/40-17s all the way around.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
