Default I went to the track for the first time Saturday......results===>

Well it was a beautiful day up at New England Dragway Saturday and I competed in a Vette v.s. Viper bracket race. I was running consistant 14.4 all day so that's what I decided to dial in at. Well I made it to the second round and then ran a 14.2 and was eliminated from the competition. Oh well, I had fun!! :D

Here's my numbers from that run:

Dial... 14.40
R/T..... .660
60'..... 1.989
330.... 5.879
1/8..... 9.112
MPH... 77.37
1000.. 11.909
1/4.... 14.265
MPH.. 94.99

Well there you have it my very first Drag Race!! It was a blast!!
My question is how can I get my Vette into the mid to high 13's??? I don't want to unlaod a ton of cash on new heads or cam. I just want to shave about 5 tenths of my times, any idea's with just bolt on's????

Thanks,
Mark

Oh my Vette's an auto!! ;)

Hmmm with your mods listed in your sig, I would think you could hit mid 13's.

I was thinking the same thing?? I have about 81K on my Vette now which isn't that many miles. Something's got to be wrong?

I'm not sure of my RPM's, I was too busy just concentrating on the run! LOL!
Your right the gears might be hurting me but they were FREE!

When I first bought my Vette I blew the old 2.59's, so the mechanic at the dealership told me he had a set of 3.73's If I wanted them.....I said yes! ;)
What can I do to build around them?

I may get slammed for this, but I think your 3.73 gears w/TPI is hurting your times.

When my '85 was stock w/2.73 gear, k&n, open lid, hypertech stage II chips, flowmasters and t.b. bypass I was running 14.14 @ 96-97mph with 2.1 60' times all day @ u.s. 41 in Morocco Indiana.

Do you know what rmps you were going throug the traps at and what gear???
I was thinking the same thing. The consensus here seems to be somewhere between a 3.07-3.55 as being the ideal gear for the L98. I ran 14.10's regularly with 2.59's at a track almost 1000' above seal level here. Your 60' times are killer though and your 1/8 mile times are pretty good too. It seems that it falls off after that point which tells me that you're motor's out of breath. You'll either have to open up the airways (cam/heads/exhaust/induction) or go to a more optimal gear.

Still, those times are better than most street cars today

That's a nice 60' time. Remember that the weather can have a big effect on performance.

Bone stock mine ran mid-low 14s; most mods to date are on my site. For some general data you've got mail.

If it helps any for reference, I ran mine on a 1/8 mile and had about the same 60' and 9.2 at the 1/8. Completely stock 86 auto L98. If I remember I'll find the time slips and get specifics.

Looks like the ZZ-9 Cam is the way to go, it shaved a whole second of that '90 Vettes time!

Let me pipe in here for a moment.....

...1st of all Mark did a GREAT job for his first time ever. Let me add this to the pot, the first time he ever gets up to a christmas tree (against me at that), he pulls a .503 light. I had to play catchup at this point since I had a .627 light (sleeping I guess)! He pulled an almost identical 2.142 60' to my 2.146 (yup, he had a better one than me, and I had drag radials!!! on that day). I only nicked him out with a 14.225 to his 14.495 on this very first run of the day.

I think that his car will most definitely be in the high 13s the way that it is right now. The weather conditions on Saturday were 2900' above sea level (NED is actually 90' above sea level in real life.)

My own car was down about 4mph all day long, and I couldn't break into the 13s even with 1.9x 60's almost all day. The best I managed was a 14.022 for the day. Usually when I pull a 2.0x 60' I hit the 13.8x E/T territory, so the weather was definitely hurting us. I wonder what the 1.9x's would of given me. Also Powershifter's Z06 was running 12.4x all day when he usually deadly consistent is in the 12.0x-12.2x range depending track conditions.

So, Mark, I think your car definitely will hit 13s when we get some more normal weather. :D :D

Thanks Scorp, those are encouraging words! I had no idea about the sea level conditions.
I just can't wait for the day when I can write 13.XX on my window at one of these races!! It was a lot of fun running against you!

The worst part of the day is when I lined up against that Twin Turbo Lingenfelter C-5! He ran a 11.95 @ 107.81 on me! All I could see was the flash of his silver paint as I admired his tail lights!

Don't rule out the 219 from LPE...you knew I was gonna say that didn't ya! It's tried and true...over and over. You can have your cake and eat it too with that cam.

Good job on the racing! Have fun...

Great 60' time. Do you still have your cats? Just a thought. I run mid 14s in hot weather and hope to see high 13s this winter in my 85. You did a fantastic job for your first time out.

Thanks!! Yes I still have the cats in. I'm going to head back to the drags a few more times before the season ends. I have to reach the 13's before the year ends, it will make my winter toasty!!
