Is a G tech accelerometer worth it i am thinking about buying one and was wondering if they are accurate at all ive heard both ways if you have one please let me know.
How far off were the horespower and tourqe numbers it gave and what did it says your 1/4 mile time was
it was semi accurate but from my area to the track is a drastic temperature change and altitude difference. If you really want one,get a GTECH PRO SS. The HP/TQ isn't very accurate IMHO.
I'd run 13.10@107mph last time out with less mods, near stock LT1 6mn on drags radials with GTECH PRO SS.
not sure exaxtly how accurate it is between track times and the g-tech times, but it will give you a decent indication on how much difference a mod has made to your car.
try a controlled (as possible) run before the mod, then with the mod try to match the conditions of the pre mod run.... then that run will hopfully be better than the per mod run.
If you want some kind of performance meter, get one of those GPS types. The accelerometer type like the original G-Tech has too many flaws.
First, in order to get repeatable results for comparison, you need to have it positioned exactly the same every time. That can't be done unless you leave it in place.
Second, to get a HP rating, you have to enter the exact weight, and to do that you need two things. One is the actual weight of the car, teh other is patience. Because to enter the weight into the G-Tech, you have to tilt it until the weight scrolls up and you'll never get it exact unless you get lucky.
That being said, when I entered the weight of my truck(it was off by a few pounds light), it said I was making 600 HP, this is from a 200,000 mile never touched 4.3 V6.
Also to calculate the HP, you need to accelerate to a speed of 120 mph or reach a certain G-Force to get a proper reading. My truck wasn't capable of either so that would explain the false reading.
At the track, I ran my six speed with it and it was off by a lot.
Tracks measure trap speed, they take a reading at 66' before and anothr at the finish line to determine trap speed, so it is an average.
The G-Tech gives an actual MPH , so it will always read higher.
What you have to watch is, if you are bracket racing and hit teh brakes early to avoid a breakout, the G-Tech stops measuring when you hit the brakes.
I ran a 13.20@105, but the G-Tech said 12.20@112.
SO unless you find one used for cheap, I wouldn't get one.
They are useful as a tuning tool as long as you can duplicate your test area and leave the unit in place. You can compare changes you made
with the G-Tech. At that point it doesn't matter if they are actually correct, all that matters is that the test conditions were identical and it will show a negative or positive change.
