What are good on/off fan temps?
Since I'm going to the dyno tomorrow to get a tune or just see what's going on. Wouldn't it be worth it to program the fans to come on sooner?

Bryan at PCMFORLESS did mine on at 208* off at 197*. The car operated perfectly in 130* pavement two hour traffic jam yesterday with max at 211*. Before the factory setting allowed 230* Best change in the brain next to hauling more azz. The AC fans keep it about 195-200* The needle pegged to the bottom of the temp guage used to worry me a bit.
The '96 has two speed relay. Both running on low can't be heard, and almost no drop on the juice meter.
Beware of going too cool for the LTxs. They are designed hot blooded.

180 thermo, both main and aux. come on at 200-205, off at 185
running 178-185 no fans coming on...stop and go ambient temps 85-95 she runs up to 211, cools back down. This is on an 87. BTW, I didn't reprogram the computer to accomplish this, and there's a tech tip on how to do it. Not sure on an LT4 though.

Say Rick, where might one find the tech tip to adjust the fans on/off temps? I'm not sure which thermostat I have, but on a 70* morning the digital guage stays at ~195. In stop and go, the temp can get to 230* before I hear fan noise. I have a 94 LT1. Thx!

It should go off at least 10F above your t-stat setpoint. And 10F looks like a reasonable deadband for the fan control.
If your fan shutoff is at your tstat temp or below, then well, you just plain screwed up.
So with a stock 180 lt1 stat, a main fan at 200-190 is good. The 2nd stage should probably be set at least 5F higher than that.
Anyhow, I have stock fan settings and an override. I think the 228 fan setting is just dandy for driving around. At the track when I need it my fan switch will hold the coolant temp right at the tstat rating.

Ask Bryan and take his advise. I strongly recommend that you let him decide. These temps are all part of the tuning and when you start telling them how to do it or what to change, you cant blame anyone but yourself if the end result is not what you wanted. Its kinda like going into a restruant and telling the cook how to cook your meal.

With a 180* t-stat, my main fan comes on at 195*, and I just discovered that the secondary fan comes on at 200*. I have no idea when they shut off, but I think about 190.

I just looked mine up. Mine is off at 80 and 84 C. and on at 84 and 87 C. This is with a 160 t-stat which is roughly equiv. to a 180 t-stat in a L98 due to the reverse flow design of the LT1.
PS not trying to be a smartazz giving celceus readings instead of farenhite. Thats what CATS uses in their program.

There's no burning of a chip in a 96, it's flash OBDII. And...the cables and program are hella expensive so I feel more confident leaving this stuff up to someone who's been there done that hundreds of times.

I'm gonna pull this one from the cellar so as not to generate a new thread.
Bryan changed the fan settings, I don't remember what to though, sorry. He said his settings would would work great with a 160 t-stat but until I put one in the fans would run a lot. Well they were so today I got a 160 t-stat and popped it in.
Went for a ride tonight and was surprised the temps hardly ever even got to 187, that's where I think he made the primary come on. I had to go into town and do some traffic light driving to get the temp to that number. The fan came on and quickly went off again, didn't notice the temp but it may have been in the 170's
This seems about right and will help a lot at the track, now maybe I won't have to launch at 200 to 230 anymore. Too much timing gets pulled at those temps.
My question is, why can't you just use a 160 t-stat with no programing? It seemed like it was working without it as the temps mostly stayed below his set point anyway.
