I didn't want to do it... but I've read to many good things in the archive, so I'm changing the gears on my 92 automatic w/ 110,000 miles on it. (stock 2.9 gears now)
Right now I'm deciding between 3.45 and 3.54 (it probably doesn't matter)
Gas mileage is a concearn for me. I don't drive it every day - but I do drive it probably 3 days a week and when I do I'm taking it 50-80 miles at a time. I probably drive 1/3 city, 1/3 expressway, 1/3 country. Right now I get an average of about 26-27 mpg and I'm hoping to keep that above 25
Anyways I need a bit of information:
1) Where should I order my gears? How much will they be?
2) Do I need any sort of install kit? Again how much?
3) Where can I get these installed at? and........ how much? :D
4) Where can I get the resulting speedo error corrected? And..... how much?
I DO NOT want to change out my rear end so I'm hoping I can get all 4 of the above points taken care of for less than $1000.... is that realistic?
I think it can be done for around a grand. Since you have the 2.59 gear now you're going to need a new carrier, no idea on cost. The gears will probably run around $350-$400 and another $300-$400 for labor. I always like to err on the high side, better to have $ left over.
If you go with the 3.45 I would order GM gears. Alot of people complain about Richmond Gears being noisy, I had them (3.42) in my 92 Camaro and they were fine, providing they are setup correctly they will be ok.
Find a reputable speed shop or a shop that specializes in Corvettes that can do the gears for you.
If you go to the dealer it will end up costing you alot more than $1,000.
TRY USAZR1 he is a forum member and can get the gears you need very reasonably. he is in the ZR1 forum alot so you may get faster response if you post a questionable topic opr page for him there.
Good decision! You won't regret it. The milage penelty on 3.45s is nominal. The SOTP feel is amazing. If the Richmonds are not set up properly they will have a slight whine.
Now about correcting the speedo... is that just a gear? If so what size do I need? Or is a computer correction? If so can GM handle it?
I'm still a bit confused about who to have install them. I know I don't want a dealer, but can any mechanic do it? Midas? Muffler Man? or what kind of shop?

Re: Ok I'm getting gears! (Bradley33)
Idrove my stock LT1 everyday for 4 years ( a total of 65,000 miles) with 3.73 gears and a 2600 Vigilante convertor and it was great.
Don't count these out.
