Default cant get valve covers back on....stud to short???

I pulled the valve covers to paint and put in new gaskets...cork is the only available here on island...set the covers back on and the studs dont come all the way through...I cant apply enough pressure to push cover down to get nut on....am I missing something....or are the gaskets wrong? they fit the cover right..

Shayne,

The only things I can think of are:
1.) The parts people gave you the wrong part (too thick).
2.) There are still pieces of the old gasket still attached to the head or the
valve cover.
3.) Make sure that no ignition wires are wedged between the head and valve
cover.

I did the gaskets on my '86 iron head and had no problem with the installation. I do remember that the ignition wires did get in the way but once they were cleared I had to press down firmly in order to seat the covers. I hope this helps.

Did you put roller rockers on? I put 1.6's and had to remove the baffles off the v/c 's. Otherwise...... but I'm in your same boat, I couldn't re-install a dipstick tube yesterday. Good luck

Reallly check those ignition wires. I wasn't as swift as CG77vette and I got the bolts on and torqued em down. Ended up bending the valve cover flange and they leaked like a seive. Had to pull them off again, pound the flange flat and reinstall...
