Is there a big difference between 5w30 and 10w30 ? I see 10w30 on sale at WalMart in the 5 gallon jugs all the time and I know that there is a sticker on my 94 LT1 with the recomendations from Chevy to use Mobil 1 5w30 , I was just wondering would it make any difference
I just bought 3 of those 5 gallon containers today and my wife and I had the same conversation. Her car takes 15W40 and all they had was 15W50 so I bought her two. (I bought 1 container of 5W30 was for me:D) I think the weight mostly has to do with the temperature of where you're driving. To answer your question, 10W30 won't hurt. But I wouldn't go with anything thicker.
I live in a much cooler climate than you (almost 9,000 feet) so I bought the 10-30, but also several quarts of the
0-30 Mobil 1 so I can mix it with the 10-30 in winter.
If I remember correctly they are like $17-18. I go in to walmart looking for the jugs of Mobil 1 and they have everything but that. Damnit, shows u to stock up when u can.
Sae 5W oil has a viscosity of 3.8 min. (CST) at 100 C. 10W is 4.1. These grades have no maximum. The manual allows 10W with temperature restrictions. Pure synthetic base stocks flow well at low temperatures even if they are on the heavy side. But the lower viscosities flow faster of course.
You could search the TDS's of various blenders web sites and find the MRV borderline pumping temps but 10W will be fine.
So use 10W if you want. I use 5W-30. It' works fine.
Work on something else important. The cooling system for instance. There is far more trouble with that in engines.
