Default LT4 Red Plug Wires

My Lt4 has red Packard wires. Were these standard? Does GM still sell them?

Yes, the red wires were standard on the LT4. GM still sells them. Retail is about $200. Wholesale is ~$125 at last check and you can get that price at dealers like Superior Chevrolet (ask for Chris May and reference the Forum).

The replacement wires are not identical to the originals. The originals have the cylinder number on each wire, the replacements do not.

Lots of better aftermarket wires out there for a lot less money FWIW.

Thanks Jim. Would you happen to have a GM part#?

12173591 original GM spark plug wire set number. Looks like you can still buy them at different places, unless you're going going for a 100% stock appearance for shows there are better wires out there.

Stay with 8mm though, some that are sold are 8.5mm (MSD) and you'll find yourself having one hell of time getting them through the PS pump bracket, not to mention having to drill your wire management clips out bigger.

Other wires also have the same exact specs (electrically) as the MSD wires only in a smaller, but correct 8mm size. I will give the MSD wires a thumbs up for prettiness though.

I installed a set of MSD wires on a '95 a while back, my friend buys into every sales gimmick there is, he HAD to have them, and it was a painful experience.

I suppose if you bought some other sort of wire management system the MSD's would be fine, but with the stock looms and clips it doesn't look that great. Why they add that extra .5mm is beyond me, that just totally messes up the whole works.
