X pipe with stock mufflers on LT1 ?
I had flowmaster 40's and didn't like them. I put my stock exhaust back on and it's too quiet. I am thinking a X pipe with the stock mufflers might be the ticket. Anyone run this set up and how does it sound ?

My experience, and a lot of other threads seem to agree, is the x pipe will make it quieter. Sounds good but quiet until you get on it. Right now I have a stock LT1 exhaust (on an L98) with the x pipe and its pretty quiet. No resonance. I am thinking about putting my flow masters back on to get a little more volume.
Why did you not like you flowmasters? Mine came off with original L98 system. That combination had unbearable resonance at highway speeds. I was able to silence the resonanc by plugging one of the two tail pipes on each side.
Maybe the best trick would be to have the flow masters with a flapper to close off one outlet when you want it quiet and open up when you want some volume.

I run long tubes then straight pipe back to an X-Pipe then straight pipe to stock mufflers...nice sound, not too loud but strong at WOT...no resonance at cruise speeds...no emissions here so no cats or pre cats...

I've got a '96 LT4. I'm running the stock exhaust system, but had the resonator replaced with 2.75" straight pipe. I like the sound - a little deeper than stock, a mild roar at full throttle, and no resonance.

It's a mixing chamber. Also notice in the pic that the tubing narrows quite a bit just before it enters the resonator and then again inside. I installed a Corsa system on my '96 CE LT1 2 weeks ago and measured the pipe. It narrows to 2.25 at the resonator, I'm not sure what inside. So, when people ask why you would replace the stock 2.75 system with a 2.50 system, I guess that would be the answer. It also narrows to 2.25 at the mufflers.

Thanks for posting the link to my picture. I am at work and someone actually wanted to work...so I could not go get the picture and post it again.
Thanks again.
I sure enjoy the X pipe on my '96 LT4 that replaced the resonator.

I have a 95 and ran stock mufflers with x-pipe for about 2 weeks. A little deeper but still too quiet. Better acceleration with x-pipe. Then had the mufflers eliminated. Sounds great but I could still go louder. Headers look good in the future.

i was thinkin about doing the same thing...ha, i wanted to do an x pipe on mine but i didnt wanna do it untill i know wats going to happen or whatever...so my question basically is...if i do an x pipe will it sound just alittle bit louder...an if i do that will i loose performance or hp or tq?...or will i gain hp or tq?

According to B&B, if you replace the resonator with an X-pipe you will gain about 30% more noise. B&B has a X-pipe option and I asked what the difference in sound would be and this is what they estimate it to be.

I put an X-Pipe on mine in December..I drag race a lot and I can tell you after 60+ passes that I have seen no improvement with the X-Pipe...I was looking for a bit more grunt on launch but I don't see any change...I probably could have saved the $100 but, oh well...

Was it louder?
