Default Timing Chain Cover & Elec Water Pump

If I install an elec water pump on my LT4, Can I get a cover without the pump drive. Will a Gen 1 cover fit or must I plug the existing one.

You can leave the shaft in the cover or remove the shaft and plug the cover. I don't know if there is a cover without a hole for use with an electric pump. You could check with summit or other vendors to see if they have a cover. A plug would work fine and would be behind the pump and out of sight.

The thought of leaving the shaft sticking is out is to me a potential leak. Is a plug available or would I have to fabricate one?

Also, if I put on an SBC double chain, the driveshaft will have to go.

Is the cover stamped steel like a Gen I SBC? If so, I could weld it up.

Jbweld a 50 cent piece in there, works perfect. There are freeze plugs that size also.

I had my buddy weld a piece of aluminum in there. You should be able to find a local welder that can tig and have them do it.

This is what I did. Make sure the guy welding knows what he/she is doing because too much heat can distort the aluminum and cause premature failure on the opti seal.

Eddie,
You can press the gear off the shaft whether you decide to run a double roller chain or not and just use the shaft thru the seal as an option like I did. You should not have any leaks as long as the seal is good and installed correctly.Welding does risk warpage and also prevents you from ever going back to a mechanical type pump in the future if the need ever arises without buying a new cover. Just food for thought. Just don't ever leave the driven gear installed when using an electric pump on a stock chain and gear to free wheel unloaded because you could have some serious tooth chatter, chafing, or gauling causing possible gear failure or breakage.Just my 2 cents.

Rick
