I discreened the MAF because I came across one for 20 bucks I think it came out of an Iroc or something. But I bought it and discreened it! And the gains were amazing I think for a free mod! My car is a 1986 automatic and also has K&N, Cut Air Lid, TB Bypass, Mild cam, .030bore, forged pistons, clevite bearings, Roller timing chain, Msd wires, Magnaflow High flow cat, lt mufflers, and a rebuilt tranny! Before it was fast but now I can be cruzin and at about 15mph and floor it and the tires will chirp at the point of down shift! Im Happy!
I couldn't really tell SOP when I descreened mine. Maybe I need one from and IROC to try.
Don't put too much oil on your K&N now or it will load up the wires and take the tire chirp back out of it.

Removing MAF screens increases HP due to a scientific phenomenon known as the placebo effect.
Also the removal of a significant restriction, ie reduced cross-section, helps too.......more than a placebo....
It depends, but somewhere around 5 hp gain is probably realistic..
My screen is gone....no SOP when I removed it......no before and after dyno......no before and after track times......but visually it was a good thing to do......and again I doubt, but don't know for sure, whether it screwed up my laminar flow......but my motor does run pretty good!!
A great mod considering it is FREE!! but just my humble opinion...
this intake tract thread is cotroversial to say the least.the cut lid,k&n vs. paper, and the maf screen removal debate is interesting and deserves another shot.is it possible there was a problem with the original maf with the screen? i would never ? a members post of performance gains, thats what this forum is here for.is the screen to catch "debris" in case of a broken filter or plastic housing?how can debris large enough to be caught by the screen make it past the filter?if the screen was condensed, what would the actual area be?1/4 inch or 2 inches for example.just wondering.junior
Well I do have a AF gauge and it does read diffrent with the discreened MAF! Before it use to read right above the stoichemetric point and know it reads about half ways throw the rich point!

On an LTx engine removing the MAF screen is a waste of time.
