Default Difference between a LT1 cam core and traditional SBC cam core?

WHat's the difference between a LTX specific cam compared to say an L98 or traditional SBC cam core ?

I think the only difference is the LT1 has a drive pin in the front which can be removed.

So it's just the drive pin, which I believe is for the water pump drive?

Nope, the LTX water pump is driven off the water pump drive shaft, which is driven off the upper timing gear..

On the 95/96 LT1, the pin drives the opti. On the 92-94 the opti is driven off a splined shaft that inserts into the upper timing gear.

The difference IS the pin length and for a Gen 1 block you cut that pin's length I believe in half. It's been a few years so I don't exactly remember the length you cut it to, .375" kinda rings a bell.

The cores are the same (meaning bearings and lobe placement). There are some subtle differences that will vary from cam to cam - distributor gear, fuel pump lobe, and the dowel pin already mentioned.

Ok because COmp cams will not custom grind an LTx solid roller cam, but have a 4/7 swap available for a traditional sbc. Im using an electric water pump and no optispark so a regular sbc cam should work fine. Thanks for the input !

How about sharing some pictures and information on how you got rid of the opti.

whoa! it doesn't matter to you since no more opti, but for future reference when other people do a search:

the late opti requires the LTx core. the LTx core has a large hole bored into the nose. the opti shaft goes through the cam sprocket and into the cam's nose.

Be aware a cam for a regular SBC (retro roller cam ) will require a cam button to hold it in as the L98 / LT1 cams has a machined recess on the front for the cam retainer plate.
