Default Is it GM or my local Chevy Dealer? Ordering parts

In the process of installing a ZF-6 in a 1986 Coupe. Needed the special tranny oil and went to my local Chevy dealer. Asked for three quarts of tranny oil (part # 1052931)... man looks at his computer and says the minimum order was 12 quarts at $10.00 each. Told him to skip that and went to BMW and paid $8.95 a quart for the three I needed.
When I asked for two bolts for a starter, the long one was available at Chevy and cost $3.12; the short one could only be had in a minimum order of 5 and $2.68 each.
When I asked what happens when a car comes in for servicing, I got a response that they order parts the same way for them.
Is that really true or was the guy not interested in dealing with a small order?

I am not familiar with them, but dealerships do have minimum orders on some items.

I ordered and received from the Chevy dealer (once they found the correct PN) the 2 bolts I needed for the caliper mounting bracket. There was no mention of a minium order amount.....

Small dealers won't stock many parts. When I find these guy's I stay away. They are basically telling me, "We don't want your small business".

Find the big dealer in your area. They will be more accomidating.

My dealership stocks that tranny fluid, and it's only $8 a quart.

I would say the same thing-find another dealer...

Some even charge below retail where others will charge full retail(norm). It is surprising at the differences-you would think a Chevy dealer is a Chevy dealer.

If you have a local Vette Club, check with it and see if they're dealing with a particular Dealer. If so, you may find the right quanity of parts plus a discount.

Although there is good sized Chevy dealer not far from my office, I don't have much luck in them having the part I need in stock.

Lately I have called Scoggin-Dickey in Lubbock, TX and they usually have the parts. If I call them before noon, it ships that day UPS ground. Because I'm in the DFW area, UPS delivers the following day. Scoggin-Dickey's prices are very good so even with the shipping costs, it ends up about the same or slightly cheaper than the local dealer.

I get my stuff from http://www.paceparts.com if I have enough time. We have a discount chevy dealer here (and no sales tax !)so I don't have to order stuff that often.

I buy all my vette items at wholesale cost from Fichtner Chevrolet. He is a forum supporting vendor. Good folks to deal with and very low prices compared to my local dealers.

wkitman-
Appearing that your question was not really answered, I'll give my $.03 worth. The
minimum quantity of any part # packaged and shipped from GM, is determined by GM.
As you have experienced, sometimes the quantity packaged as a unit, defys common
sense logic. I'm clueless myself at times. Your guess is as good as mine as to how
they determine the quantity.

I was told that some dealers use the standard GM parts pricing whereby single cheap parts are marked up above retail price if your total order is under some threshold (something like $100). You need to get to know your friendly parts counter guys - especially if the local dealer supports a Vette Club you're a member of. :D Heck, they know my phone number by heart at the local dealer (Tate Chevrolet)!! I get a discount for being a Corvette Annapolis Member - and they don't do the above retail price thing, even if I'm only ordering $15 worth of stuff. :chevy
