My car is pinging, and I don't know what it is, maybe knock sensors, will adding octane booster stop the pinging, and is it dangerous to use as a fuel additive? Thanks, Suke.

An octane booster might cure the symptom but mask the problem.

Look at timing, EGR function and A/F ratio. When my knock sensor circuit is functioning properly I can't hear ping though I can see knock counts on the scan tool.

I know someone with a Snap-On scan tool, I think its a scan tool, it works with like a lot of cars, is that what you are talking bout when you say scan tool? It has a wire harness that hooks up to the Vette under the driver side dash.

Sounds right. I have an AutoXray that plugs into the ALDL under the driver side dash.

Yeah, something is wrong if you're getting pinging... use the booster as a last resort.

adding octane boost will undo the problem... but you dont want to use octane boost for everytime you fuel up that would be a pain. you should see if your timing is off maybe to advanced?

So how would I exactly use one of these tools, hook it up and just write down the a/f ratio, egr function, and timing and then post it up here for you guys to evaluate :D ? Do I drive the car with the scan tool on so I get values while driving?

The method depends on the functions available. My AutoXray has a "Monitor Mode" that gathers values of all data parameters at one second intervals over 30 seconds with a trigger midway. This allows me to start out at idle and drive through the engine conditions of interest while gathering data. Then I enter the data into a spread sheet for study. Sometimes the cause of a problem just jumps out; other times it takes some study.
