On the driver side near the brake booster, find a tan wire with a black stripe. Plug looks like an O2 plug. Unhook it. Start car and set timing at 6*. Turn off car and hook it back up. Done.

......i agree however, as i don't recall, does that not set up a code that has to be cleared?

On my 87 its a soft code. Its in memory but does not give a service engine light. After the car is driven a few times, it goes away.

Not positive about the 91, but on my 86 it sets a code 42 (EST).

Disconnecting the tan/black stripe and starting the engine will also set a code on my 89. To remove the code, disconnect the negative battery cable for about 30 seconds and reconnect it.

Yeah, mine gets a code 42 when EST is unplugged. I leave the battery disconnected for about 10 minutes to clear.

Are you sure ? For example , I set the timing. No service engine light, but if I datalog the code will be stored. After driving a week I may datalog and it will be gone. Try it.
