Changing rear wheel bearing this weekend ('88) any tips?
I'll be changing rear wheel bearing on my 88 this weekend. I have it up in the air so I can sit down and see the three torx head bolts
Any tips or shortcuts
Thanks

It's been awhile since I last did one on my car. Just plan on taking twice as long as you think it should. I don't remember it being too tough tho. Good luck.

Hi Jack. When I did mine I wasn't able to get two of the torx bolts loose and had to remove the entire knuckle assembly to get it onto a bench. I'm not sure that I would'nt remove the knuckle again since it is really not too hard. I used an electric impact tool, and still was unable to do the job on the car. Some people don't have any problems with this.
Good luck.
"62 yesterday" Tom.
p.s. I always bandage my own knuckles before I start a job like this. Knowing that I will be damaging them anyway. hehehe

A long (10"+) extension for your socket, a quality Torx bit and a little patience.

Jack: Did this a few years ago. Pretty straight forward operation. Used an extension with a wobble joint to get the Wheel Hub Mounting Bolts off. Removing the Axle Tie Rod from the Suspension Knuckle and pushing it to the rear gives you a little more room to swing a wrench. A little tight in there but they came off with little problem.
Be sure to put a little "loctite" on the bolt threads when you reassemble things.
There was NO WAY that I could fit a torque wrench in that tight space so that was "guess and by golly". I suppose that if one removed the Suspension Knuckle it could be torqued. The spec is 66 lbs, ft for the Wheel Hub Mounting Bolts.
The Spindle Nut spec is 164 lbs, ft. Since most torque wrenches don't go that high, I used a "beam" type torque wrench and estimated the overswing to get in the ball park. The assembly has been in for several years and over 5000 miles so I guess it is okay.
One of the mags (Vette?) had a do-it-yourself article on this just this past month. May be of some help.
Hope to see you at the BG Cruise In in May.
Regards, Steve

 Thanks all
Tom (NHVETTE) Good to hear from you! Tom Gaul and I were talking about you at the Skyline Cruise. We had hoped you would be there. Any chance you will make it to Bowling Green again in May?
Steve (WILDRIDE) How are you doing? I think the wheel nearibg (secret code word for bearing) problem may have stemmed from my camber problem :(
It's not to bad right now, but its the kind of thing that stays on your mind and ruins your deiving pleasure.
look forward to tossing down a few with you in Bowling green in May ;)
I've already booked Wed thru Sat at my el cheapo Motel 6
Stay in touch

Use plenty of Liquid Wrench. Those Torx bolts were a pain to get off.
