Default return line fuel filter

So is that part that sits above the fuel filter another fuel filter only on the return side? I have noticed it on a few different L98 C4s and never have found any info on it. Just curious to know what the heck it is. Thanks.

Some C4's did have a fuel filter on the return line. It should be the same filter for both lines.

Some of the early model C4's have a filter on the return line. My '87 has this set up. The filter on the return line is actually used as a noise dampening device to reduce the "pulsing" noise of the returning fuel. They also have different part numbers. On my '87, the supply filter is a AC Delco GF481 and the return filter is a AC Delco GF157.

OK, I thought it was a filter but had simply not taken it apart to look at it. Thanks.
