Re: Best L-98 Stroker Motor (BlackRocket)
My vote is for a 406. The only problem with anything bigger than 383 is that 400 blocks are hard (impossible) to find and an aftermarket block is needed to build it. A 396 is OK but the stroke is streching it on a stock block.
The one advantage in a new 400 block is that you can get 1 piece rear seals and roller lifter bores. The conversion rollers have durability issues.
Of course this is only my opinion, your results may vary.
I forgot to say that this is my decision after researching it for my car. I hope to swap out in the spring.

Re: Best L-98 Stroker Motor (DON M)
383 stroker crank is smaller main journal than the 400 crank GM had a good reason to make the crank bigger ( read stronger ) You can buy a brand new GM bowtie sporstman block for $499.00 this is not as strong as some racing blocks but it will take more than you can ever put to it natually aspirated. people try to make big power with little expenditure and it cost them more in the long run because it will blow. :mad Been there and done that

Re: Best L-98 Stroker Motor (importeater)
I have a Jim Pace GM parts warehouse catalog and they are listed in it for $499 but I just checked at the website and it is $1699 guess I should have ordered one from the catalog. I have two 400 blocks that I gave $100 a piece for them one is in my car right now holding the other in reserve just in case I have one of those unscheduled engine disassemblies. MAN I HATE THEM :D

If I had to do it over again, either a 420 would reside, OR the 383 with Brodix Track 1s.
The best bet is to go with the largest SBC you can.

Re: Best L-98 Stroker Motor (Vic'89)
I agree about going with the largest cubes one can build. I have the 408 sc w/ N2O, and am now wishing I had shoved a 4.25" stroke in the L-98 block. Some people say that you cannot shove more that 3.75" stroke in a factory block, but with the right parts (mainly Oliver stroker cut rods) I believe that 4.25" stoke will fit without hitting water.
I am now in the planning phase of a 400 bore bow tie block (a friend has a Donovan aluminum block that had sustained minor damage, has already been repaired, but still uses a two piece rear main seal) with more stroke and 18° heads.
This motor should run circles around my current combo, which is healthy in itself. It will also probably wind up in my 3000 lb '89 coupe, which is a much better platform.
Best of Luck in your decision. There are lots of options.

JD, I would not go with the Track 1 heads on 383 cubes. They are better suited for more cubes. Even Lingenfelter does not bolt them onto 383, does he? the only thing I remember seeing is a 420 with Track 1's. :)
Then again, this is all bench racing, right. :) :)

Re: Best L-98 Stroker Motor (2FST4U)
Hi 2fst...
Actually I think a few LPE Cars had gone with the track 1's(383's) it's very doable...You just have to machine the super ram. Believe me, when My Car was there back in April..I contemplated doing it. Too $$$ at the time. I make 440 now with the stock D Ports(hogged out)...I was told upper 4's to possibly 500 ponies with those heads(and if I wanted more, a slightly lumpier camshaft). A well blended 383 can match the hp figures of a 420..but the larger motor will make more torque due to the displacement. Heh, too much is just right. We're never satisfied.

I'd opt for the 420. Its pretty easy to get 500 hp out of one of those. Chevy High Performance has a little write up about a new gasket Fel Pro has come out with for the small block 400 to improve cooling the two center bores.
With 500 hp and 500+ ft lbs of torque, who needs NOS ? :D
