Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98
I am looking for a proven head/cam combination that will help me meet or exceed 300rwhp in my 1990 L98 Tpi 6spd. It is a daily driver so reliability is crucial. I have done the exhaust and ported the stock intake and plenum along with SLP siameesed runners. I have been looking at Brodix dragon slayer heads or canfields along with the LT4 hot cam kit. Are there any better combinations?

Might want to take a look at the Air Flow Reseach 1.90 heads with the LPE 219 cam... that seems to be a very popular setup, althou with the stock intake, 300 rwhp might be hard to get.

Well.... you will need about 360hp for 300rwhp with that tranny. So you are basically looking at a 110hp upgrade.
AFR 190 Heads ready to go for $1200
LPE 74219 (or similar) Cam for about $300
You probably should get the large runners aslo, as the intake is still going to really choke you.

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (WINNER)
Thanks for the replies. I have pretty much ported the stock intake out as far as possible and also ported and siameesed the plenum to match the siameesed runners so far. I would like to keep as much low and mid range torque as possible. Any other suggestions?

These will give more than ported/siamesed stock runners, and still give you low/mid range torque. Pretty expensive though for a '90 L98. :(

If youre dead set on swapping heads I'd personally go with the AFR 190's. Lots of people here have used em with great results. Depending on how much your willing to spend go with a head/cam/intake swap. Superam upper and lower, bigger cam(your choice), and some heads (afr 190). I think it is possible to get 300rwhp with the stock heads and a very mild street port. Have them shaved a bit, maybe .010 and use a victor reinz .029 compressed thickness head gasket. Sell your current intake and runners and get the superam...its worth it. So, $500 for some minor head work, $600-$800 for a superam after you deduct what you sell your intake for. $400 for camshaft. That should do it.

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (WINNER)
My L98 is currently putting 350-360 hp to the rear wheels through 1 1/2" edelcrap headers. Dyno numbers in my sig are old and are with a Super Ram and LPE 219/219 cam. My current combination has run 4/10ths and 5 mph better in the 1/4. With long tubes, I would expect no less than 370 RWHP.
I am running a Mini Ram, 58mm TB, ZZ409 cam, Generation I Trick-Flow Twist Wedge heads, and custom programming. The car idles perfect, gets 25 mpg on the interstate and I can drive it anywhere. In fact, it has over 186,000 miles on it. It is naturally aspirated and stock displacement.
I would however recoment the AFR heads over the Trick Flow ones. The angle of the valves has made it hard for me to find springs and roller rockers that will work with 560 lift. A dremel has proven to be a most useful tool. Don't get me wrong, the TFS heads do make power.

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (scorp508)
Scorp, his isnt stock. If he has the large tube aftermarket runners he could get considerably more money for those than a set of stock runners. There have been group purchases on here and over on http://www.camaroz28.com where guys have gotten a new superam for $900 + shiping so if one were to watch and be careful that price is realistic.

I think that's a very tall order for a TPI car. I had 270 to the wheels with a warmed over cam (214/220 duration .452/.465 lift), CNC ported L98 heads, LPE headers, Ported stock base, ASM large runners, ported plenum and a 52mm throttle body. Don't get all caught up in the HP numbers game. Torque is where its at!

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (ZBRA)
Thanks for all of the replies,Would it be better to have my stock heads ported and if so who would be the best at this. Is the 219 cam a better choice than the LT4 hot cam?

Guys,
The quote of the AFR 190 heads above for 1200.oo is a bit on the light side. I just ordered them with the sensor holes, 74 cc heads milled to stock 58 cc, Valve and spring upgrade (necessary to run the 219 cam with 1.6 RR). This setup ran me close to $1800. I will be running the heads with a superram, accell base, and hooker headers. I be putting high 300's to the road with close to 400 ft/lbs. Do you think these figures are accurate? I really could care less if I have less, but I definetely want to be running mid 12's consistantly. I hope I am.

ski that set up should get you low to mid 300s to the wheels and over 400 ftlbs and mid 12's should be a snap.

How do the Canfields or Brodix heads compare to the AFR 190's ? I really would like to keep most of my low end torgue, just looking for the upper end HP to handle the LS1'S

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (WINNER)
Well, I dynoed mine when stock at 216 rwhp 320ish rwtrq. Mods in sig put it at a touch over 260 rwhp and 350 rwtrq. My trap speeds would also indicate that it really does make that much, at least. A superam and a bigger bumpstick should have gotten me upwards of 290ish, maybe 300 rwhp. If I can run 105xx mph traps it should be good for low, low 13s and possibly 12s if I could have ever got it to hook up. FWIW, I never got pulled from a roll by an LS1 powered car, only from a stop because I spun alot. Go figure.
As for the stock heads, I dont really see em as being that bad. Theyre the same heads as what comes on the ZZ4 crate motor which makes 350ish hp. If you can get em shaved a bit, a 3 angle valve job, re-seat the springs, new locks, seals and guides with a mild bowl blend they should work fine.

Re: Suggestions needed for 300rwhp L98 (WINNER)
Thanks guys. Another option i am looking at is the new SDPC TPI intake with the aluminum fast burn heads and Lt4 hot cam. Any one have experience with this setup yet? It looks as if this is not going to be an easy decision.
