Hey, I have a 84 that has been sitting in the driveway for a while not being used. Finally today i decided to try and drive it to school and it wouldnt start. When i turn the key on i hear a click that seems to come from the engine but it will not try to turn over. At first i thought maybe my battery was dead or a bad connection with my wires. But even after first trying to jump the car and then charging the battery it still will not try to turn over. I had this problem a while ago and after a couple of tries of turning the key to the on position it finally turned over and started. I am thinking that maybe my starter has gone bad but dont want to replace it without being totally sure....
Its your starter, thats the solenoid clicking. Check the connections at the starter and make sure the wires arent damaged. Theres also an inline fuse (looks like a black cylinder on the wire) make sure its not damaged either.
You can always pull your starter and have an auto parts store test it (testing is usually free).
One thing to check: If your battery cables do not have the original sealed ends, and they are using the aftermarket "clamp" type ends, you can get corrosion up the cable under the sheathing. You will clean the ends, but you will still have an intermittant start condition. I would recommend replacing the cables if you do not have the original connectors anymore.

You can disassemble the solenoid and clean up all the copper contacts and you might solve the problem at no expense. The large contact washer cab be reversed to give it all new contact area.
The "black cylinder on the wire" isn't a fuse. It is a connection for the fusible link that protects devices being fed from the starter solenoid, not power coming into it. That has no bearing on any cranking problems.
