Default Still lookin for a coolant leak

Ive been lookin but cant find anything. I get a slight smell of coolant outside and a small leak, about 1 gallon in the last 6 months and 8000 or so miles. I suspect the waterpump, guess Ill have to get a pressure test

You might check to see if the heads are "weeping". I'm told that mine are. If I drive it hard, I can smell the antifreez, but there is no appreciable loss of fluid. Maybe this winter I will have the head gaskets replaced.

I dont have any idea how to check it other than a pressure test and visual inspection

Visual inspection is what I had in mind.

If you can get it up on a lift, look for leakage that shows up below the heads, not from below the valve covers.

If it's an LT1/4 H2O pump, the most common first sign of it going is a small leak out of the weep hole. Weep hole is located on the bottom of the pump housing directly over the serpentine belt/harmonic damper. If it's leaking you'll feel a few drops after the motor heats up to operating temp. A leaking pump can take out the optispark, I'd be sure to check it soon.

Another sign of the H2O pump going on an LT1/4 motor is the power steering goes out intermittenly, the coolant leaks on the belt and the belt slips.

Hope this helps,
Eric
