Default Can LT-1 Mufflers go bad? How are they built?

I have a sputter out of both my mufflers - true duals, the sputters both started when the cats started blowing out. I've since replaced both cats and the sputter is still there

is it possible the cat chunks (they were pretty big) clogged or damaged the mufflers to cause the smooth exhaust flow to start sputtering?

does anyone know how lt-1 mufflers are built on the inside?

There's nothing to blow out, they're baffled mufflers, so it could have gotten clogged.

But the sputtering, is probably what caused your cats to go bad, the car is probably running rich or not firing right. If that's the case you may wind up damaging your brand new cats if you don't get it fixed.

They are a packed style muffler(with fiberglass mat) I think, when I had mine I swapped them for Flowmasters

I'm not sure it's the motor because it did it with the stock L98/TPI and also with my new 350 w/ heads cam and LT1 intake manifold

I didn't notice the problem until I swapped over from flowmasters to LT1 mufflers on the old L98 engine. The sputters from each pipe seemed to coincide with the cats breaking up

If chucnks are getting caugt up in the muffler it can give exactly the sound youre talking about. You may hear some rattling too if there are some loose pieces in there.

I remember back in the late 80s a lady brought one of those turbo 280 (300?)ZXs in for "loss of power"..The boss held that thing at about 4-5000 for awhile in neutral, and pieces of busted up cat were shooting out of the talipipe, had a pretty good laugh.

the internals of the Lt1 muffler are three pass perforated fiberglass wraped cells with two bridgewalls in the front and back to redirect flow through each of the three tubes. the tubes are about 1.5 to 2 in in diamater so it would have to be a large chunk to plug one

When my cats were going bad a huge chunk shot out the back bounced off the road and cracked the trucks windshield behind me. I was on the interstat doing about 70 on the way back from a trip. I would get it taken care of before something bad happens. Before the old cats were finaly removed you could also hear a rattling sound in them. My mpg went way down at this time. I could see where this stuff could possibly get stuck in the muffler.

Yeah they were 300ZX. I knew somebody that sold a turbo '85 300ZX and it only had like 20,000 miles on it. I didnt buy it cause I've got the vette. Sold for something like $800.
