Default What is this mess in my head?

all of the ports looked like this when I removed my intake today, lots of carbon buildup, but normal looking for 127,000 miles:

The rear drivers side looks like this, though:

What is that mess in there? I tried to clean it the best I could, but I was afraid as I broke stuff off, it would fall down in there and I couldn't get it back out.

The car runs perfect, but I'm sure it would run better if I could pull the heads and get them freshened up.

Oh, and I liked the look under the valve covers, pretty clean for the miles it has:

looks pretty good my engine also was really clean but has had new heads put on it. the carbon is from the EGR shooting exhaust gas back through the intake. i highly reccomend the standard abrasives delux port kit to take some metal out of the base if you have it off. maybe a dingle ball hone to work it smooth. if you haven't done the plenum now the the perfect time for that also. i used a high psi sand blaster to clean up my runners, manifold and all the carbon build up from the darn EGR inside. since i have long tube headers i just disabled the EGR which is what created the code 32 which is where you come in :) all adds up nice eh, i'll mail a few manifold pics over of what i did :chevy

Stuff a rag down each port and then grind the stuff off. Vacuum out the ports and then carefully remove the rag. The stuff in the bottom of the left port at in the second picture looks a little different from the other ports. I wonder if the injector is leaking on that port.

Gee that looks like mine, except for the really nasty one. Haven't done anything to mine yet , but will probably do the stuff rag, vacuum while cleaning deal. Still have to clean up manifold....yuck!!

Craig

Looks like it is alot of sludge build up. Maybe the oil wasn't changed often enough by previous owners.
