396 cranks are only available as forged cranks. A 383 can be had with a cast or forged crank. Cast cranks are much cheaper. If you going to be buying a forged 383 crank, it not much more at all to buy a 396 crank.
Any idea of HOW small of a base circle cam is required for the 3.75 stroke? Chris Houston (Vette92) says he thinks the HOT cam is small enough for the 3.75 stroke and 5.7" rods... perhapse if the rods were 6" or so, then I would have problems.
wow.. purdy parts.......... i want some now.... what waws your total bill for those again? i seriously think people who post pictures like that are very rude!!!!!!!!!! if your don't have enough to go around don't bring it to the forum..     seriously though gorgeous parts, making me wonder if i wouldn't be wise to go through mine now. oh well theres always somehting we're gunning for, if we had the perfect car we would never accept it... it would be a blacksheep! :D
The problem isn't necessarally with the stroke. The rod LENGTH isn't a problem by itself, either. It is the COMBINATION of the parts selected. In production 3.75" stroke (400's) engines, the rod uses a shorter bolt than any(most)other small blocks. This allows for cam to rod clearence. When assembling a non-stock combination of parts, it is best to CHECK for clearence. There are several ways to increase the cam to rod interference, if necessary. One, is to use a "stroker" rod. These rods are relieved at the upper end of the bolt. Another, is to grind the rod, or bolt head, in the upper bolt end area. A reduced (expensive?) base circle camshaft is another option. If you use 400 rods, there should be no problem with the 3.75" crank. Just realize, that it is the unique rod bolt and bolt head area that makes the 400 rod work, and not the length of the rod itself. In any case, check it. Then you'll know.

It works in my 383 with the Oliver 6" rods I have. What kind of rods are those ? Refurbish stock or bushed stock rods ?

Yes, you'll definitely have clearance issues to deal with when putting on the oil pan. The area of the pan between #1 and #2 main bearing will need clearancing (hammering). You'll also have to clearance the windage tray. The amoung of clearnance depends on the rod type you are using.
I am surprised that SCAT used the nut and bolt setup instead of just a bolt. screwing into the rod. What kind of SCAT rods are those ? The I beam ones I see on the website have cap screws.

Those are nuts? They look like a plug or something. It also looks to me like SCAT has cut out clearance on these already... look at the way they slope down.
Hmmmm..... I thought that it was the bolt head on the cap part. I can check right now because the parts are at the shop. If I'm over there today I'll take a look to make sure.
At least part of it is clearanced :D. I guess I just have to be sure that the nut/bolt head doesn't hit the oil pan now.
Ok, you were right. I was over at the shop and those are the nuts on the cap side. The bolts on the rod side are cut pretty well. I don't think i'll have to worry about the clearence there.
I think most, if not all, stock rod bolt heads are "clipped" like in the rods you pictured. Don't worry about clearence, like you said you wouldn't, but do check it!
