1984 w/ a 4+3 tranny. After some recent work, took it out for a drive, then parked it for a week and have done nothing else to it. When I went to drive it yesterday, the shifter wouldn't come out of reverse position. Removed the console found a spring inside the shifter linkage area and tried to put it back where it "looks" like it goes. I can manipulate the "detent" (???) on the rear of the shifter and the cable to the ignition switch to move the shifter into/out of reverse and into/out of the other gear positions...but now, if the shifter is in the neutral position, the tranny is engaged in reverse. If it's in ANY gear position, the car acts like the parking brake is engaged and won't move and stalls when the clutch is let out. Is my clutch fried? Clutch safety switch? shifter linkage? Any help is appreciated.
Reverse gear is stuck and putting it in a forward gear locks up the tranny. I think you may have to go under and see if there is a linkage problem. http://members.shaw.ca/dankai/Shifter.pdf
Thanks 86. You know more than I do so I'll check it--but am curious as to why the linkage would lock up? I haven't touched it except for the detent spring and it was fine. From the diagram you posted for me I'm wondering if the park lock cable may be causing the issue? What do you think.

Can't see the park lock cable having anything to do with it, nor the reverse lock out rod. I haven't had to mess with the tranny or shifter, so I can't offer any personal experience, but I have locked up a couple of transmissions.
