LT1 1996 Crank Hub install.
Well here I am about to install my hub back on my engine as I am rebuilding it after a little bolt broke. Anyways, its a 96 LT1 with reluctor wheel. I did some measuring and it seems with or without the reluctor wheel the hub doest actually come into contact with the end of the crank, yet does but up against the reluctor wheel when installed. Is this the way GM intended it to be. You would think the hubs inside would but up against the end of the crank for a more solid fit.
I did the measurements, the hub is 3.417 inches so it is the shorter of the two (95 and older is 3.516" )LT1 hubs and has been on this engine since 2001. Its just an interesting observation and I am wondering if any one else has noticed this.

Yes the hub should but up against the reluctor wheel (or the crankshaft timing sprocket on OBD1). This is how GM intended it. Even regular SBC/BBc's do this.
The balancer hub is also dead on spec (.100 shorter than a OBD1).

It does but up against the reluctor wheel, just doesnt but up against the crank snout.
The only reason I did all this is I had to have a time cert installed and I wanted to make sure the crank bolt was the correct length so it wont run out of threads at the top, as it has a shoulder with no threads on grade 8 bolts. I need to get a extra thick washer or a 1/2 shorter bolt.

It is just an observation I noted and wanted to pass on. Now I am off to find a new woodruff key, as my hub and crank are keyed, and I might as well use one as the old one is a little damaged.
