I didn't get a PKE remote with my 93 coupe....is there any way to test it to see if the PKE works before I invest in a new remote?
You can do much without a key FOB.
1) Does the PKE lamp light up for 2 seconds when you turn the key to on. This is a self test.
2) You don’t need a FOB to get into the programming mode. If you can do the procedure up to the point where you bring the FOB close to the car, then there is an excellent chance that it will work with a FOB.
FOB = not an abbreviation, just referring to the wireless transmitter attached to the keys. I got curious, and here's what Wikipedia has to say:
"The word fob may be linked to the low German dialect for the word Fuppe, meaning "pocket." "
Was curious because I just bought a 1990 and it has no remote on the keychain. I already had a problem with the alarm going off when I tried to lock the doors from the inside, so I am thinking of getting the alarm system back in tip top shape, or somehow surgically removing it and replacing it with an aftermarket system.
That's part of the VATS (Vehicle Anti Theft System). When you put the key into the lock cylinder, the car reads the resistance value to make sure it's the right one. There are like 10 different resistance values for the keys.

Sorry for the type-o, should be "without"
The PKE lamp does not light up when I turn the key to "on"....but it does flash when I start the programming procedure.....wonder if that means the system works....
Hi Guys,
Do any of you guys know where I can buy a keyless remote and a spare key for the ignition and doors (from some reasone I have one for the door and one for the ignition)
They are in different sizes. I just Got my 96 collector edition and I am trying to restore it.

Tumbleweed,
That means the PKE system is working and in 'sleep' mode. When you get a FOB and program it, take it out of 'sleep' mode by holding down the 'door' key about 10 seconds (until the door locks FULLY cycle). Same procedure to put it back into sleep mode.
This procedure switches between one and two door opening mode if the key is in the ignition.

I got my fob from the dealer, took several months to get it. There are often fobs on fleebay but I wanted a fresh one. The dealer can measure your key's resistance and cut a new one. In the small town where I live, there's a 'DoItBest' hardware that cuts Vats keys for about 1/3 what the dealer charges. Good luck restoring and welcome to a great forum.
