Default CURE FOUND!! No More Single Mass/ZF6 Rattle

Just about everyone here knows how bad a ZF6 makes noise when you put a Alum FW in front of it.

I have however FOUND THE CURE.

It seems when you put 600HP in front of the Alum FW, even through a Corsa exhaust system, the dreaded ZF6 rattle is not even noticeable.

See for yourself:

I know I haven't said much about my new engine - more than a few pics here and there. Only a few folks here were aware it was even being built. It took a lot of time, knowlege and money to built it.

Still running on the stock tune and it's a bit rich. Honestly I can't do much more than move it around the yard and idle it. Putting it on the trailer was an experience I'd like to forget - as my Corsa exhaust is going to now need replacement.

Looking to get it tuned in the next few weeks. Soon as I get the time to buy a new Corsa exhaust, put it on the car, set up a tune appointment and trailer it over to a WELL KNOWN CF tuner here in VA.

Your higher idle might have something to do with quieting the gearbox rattle? Though I think that generally works because it smooths the idle, while that thing sounds lumpy!

The resonator got hung on the beaver tail of my trailer. Everything from the resonator back is bent, kinked and dinged up.

I was being sarcastic, since everyone complaines about the ZF6 noise. Obviously the exhaust noise drowns it out.

As far as the idle, it honestly won't idle any lower right now due to the stock tune and 40lb injectors.

Even when it's tuned I expect it to idle about the same. The cam is a custom grind from Mike Jones (Jones Cam Designs).

Will: that's one way to cure the "rocks in a can" syndrone

Let us know how you go about taming this beast...

My suggestion is that you go w/ the new 3" Magnaflow cat-back system instead of the 2.5" Corsa...

That way the beast will still 'roar' rather than 'mew'...

... People going on your Public Profile to see if your Cam specs are listed. (I confess). Sounds like about 108 LSA. A good tune will often tame it down some. Bummer about your exhaust though...

What aspect of the cam would yield that exhaust note?

Love how choppy it is, is it because it has a low LSA? I have a 110 on mine and it's choppy, but not quite like that.

What are your cam specs if you don't mind sharing?

Ahh, I saw another post that showed your cam.

Yours ..... 232/238 0.544 112
Mine .......230/230 0.598 110

That choppier sound is due to higher compression maybe? I see yours is at 10.8 whereas mine is 10.0 (mechanic told me that was my CR anyway)

My idle.

My idle.

That is the cam for Nolands (BlackHarleyMan) engine. I had it ground by Reed Cams in Atlanta Ga. His hits a nice lick but is no where near as radical as my personal car (his was never intended to be).

The video is my personal car.

The cam in question is a custom grind I specd from Jones Cam Designs. The lobes are a EHR74365 Intake and a EHR75365 Exhaust. The lobes act much bigger than the numbers tell because it is an inverse flank lobe, which until very recently were used only on mech rollers.

288/292 @ .006
242/246 @ .050
.620/.620 (1.7/1.7)
106 IC / 110 L/S

A few pics of the engine

Nope. It's my daily driver. Still got the AC and Cruise hooked up. I also plan to run the 2.5" Corsa exhaust to keep some similance of streetability.

What tuner here in VA? What's the shop name, and where is he located?

Thanks!

Cool. Give us more details on the engine: heads? 383 or 396? etc.

Mine sounded like that before I put the resonator on it to quiet it down. Do you have cats on?
