Disable Passenger side airbag
Is there a way to disable the airbag so that an 8 year old can ride in the car safely? I only need to do it a couple of times a year.
Thanks

"Disabling the SIR System
Turn the steering wheel so that the vehicle's wheels are pointed straight ahead.
Turn the ignition switch to lock and remove key.
Remove "AIR BAG" fuse from I/P fuse block.
Remove the lower trim panel (hush panel)
Disconnect the Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and both yellow SIR connectors located near the base of the steering column."
The AIR BAG warning lamp will be on but you will know it is not a fault it is because you disabled it.
I do not know for sure but I suspect that if you were to only disconnect the passenger side SIR connector that would keep it from deploying. The passenger side connector is closer to the firewall and on the right of the steering column where the driver side is higher up the steering column and on the left.
From what I understand the real danger is to infants in rear-facing child seats or to anyone (child or adult) not wearing a seatbelt. I know that children oft use the seatbelt by buckling it and then sliding through the shoulder belt so that it is behind them instead of choking them or blocking their view. Have you considered a seatbelt strap that makes the shoulder belt cross lower?

I am looking for a seat belt strap to use along with a booster seat to elevate her in the seat. Since she is fairly tall for her age the booster should bring her up almost to the height of an adult. Thanks for all the information.

Hope it helps
GM says it is no longer available.
SO who here knows how to do this?
I don't care about the legalities, I want to share the ZR1 experience with my grandchildren.
There has to be a way to install a simple switch

Sorry I did't respond sooner, out of town, could not get to my completed project file. Go to www.airbagshutoff.com or call 301-473-7908. They market pass air bag shut off swithches for emergency and special purpose vehicles. Kit has key operated off/on switch with indicator and instructions, including air bag equiped C-4's. Taking the dash apart is a bigger deal then the installation. I also have a method to attach my 5 year old grandson's car seat using the hooks and harness designed for late model vehicles , if interested.

I just pulled the fuse on mine. I read somewhere that the air bags can still be residually active for up to 30 minutes after the fuse is pulled. To me that means they can't deploy after that initial stored charge has dissipated. I got underneath and checked out the plugs to the air bag as per the FSM but one of them was hard to pull off so I just left it to the fuse being pulled. Sure I get the Air Bag light but I know why. Once my kids are grown up I'll put the fuse back.

Every airbag has resistance which is monitored by module. I think it is 2K Ohm. Buy a bag of different resistors from Radio Shack and install them in turns. You have to remove metal link shorting connector.
If you do that and then sell your car you can have serious legal problems.

My 6 year old G'son loves to ride with G'pa in the Corvette. Fastest donuts in town when we ride to Krispy Kreme on Sundays! Luckily I have an 85 and so the airbag isnt an issue. I would like to see the seatbelt reconfig tho 'cause he does put the shoulder harness behind him. I always make him ride with his head against the seatback and I will probly end up smacking him with the reflex arm motion if I ever do have a wreck. Learned that one from my Mom.
