Default 94 LT1-VATS problem

Hello all,
About every 2-3 days the VATS will activate and I have to wait the approx. 20 minutes for it to reset before I can start the car. The problem is increasing in frequency. I have tried to find a pattern that causes it to activate but no luck so far.

Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas as to where to start to trouble shoot? My first inclination was to go into the doors and replace the door open/closed plunger sensors.

I guess there is no way to disable the VATS?

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

What makes you think it is Vats. Vats resets in less than 5 minutes.

It is almost exactly 19 minutes each time it happens. What else could it be?

All the dash and info center lights come on as they normally do when the car starts, but nothing else. Could the key cause that?!?!?!?

On my 96, a DTC is stored in the CCM when a VATS event is triggered by an invalid key. Do you know how to display them?

The time out is approzimately 3 mins. If you attempt another start before the 3 min timer expires, it resets.

Happened to me shortly after getting my 86. Not understanding the system I kept trying to restart. Only after reading the Owner's Manual and 30 mins in a hot Texas parking lot did I learn to wait 3 min. I did away with VATS. The alarm will still work.

I didn't think about pulling any codes but I will sure do it.

Strangly, mine will reset at that 19 minute mark no matter how many or how few times I try to start it. Wonder if the ECM is starting to falke out???

Yep a bad key or a dirty key can cause that. The oils from your hands or lotions can dirty up a key.
