Have a stock 96 LT4 coupe with 55000 miles. SES comes on from time to time with "random misfire". Sometimes it clears itself, sometimes I have to go to the shop. MR Goodwrench nor my local guy can say what the problem is. I replaced water pump, distributer, cap, plug wires and plugs at 31,000 miles. Is this a common problem? Can this be fixed?

Of course it can, everything can be fixed - it's just how much time and $$ you want to throw at it Any SES light should be able to be properly diagnosed by a GM Corvette Mechanic, period. Due to its random occurance, I'd guess it's the injectors or fuel pressure. Just keep digging...
I believe the SES refers to electrical malfunction.
A) Did the distributor cap replacement include rotor?
B) Did you check all the plug wire connections?
C) Do you hear or "feel" a misfire? If so, is it when cold and then goes away after warm up?
D) Are you injectors firing, put a long screwdriver on them and your ear on the other end, you should hear them ticking.
E) has your opti gotten wet?
Have you tried disconnecting the neg. battery terminal for about ten seconds and then reconnecting? I had the SES light come on once, still have no idea why. Did the battery thing and haven't seen it since.
My SES light came on sporadically ('95 LT1), especially under heavy acceleration. The battery was on its way out. New battery, no more SES.
Check the 'search' feature above. You'll find lots of threads/posts where a marginal battery caused the SES to illuminate and a new battery remedied the situation.
Good luck.
