How easy is it to remove the rear panel/ bumper, as I want to have it repainted...do you think this is a good idea? ie paint it off car rather than on????, the rest of the car is perfect...
Taking the rear bumper off is no picnic, if that is all you are going to paint then just have the shop mask it off and shoot it on the car. It's bad enough to have to remove the taillights to do it without removing the bumper too.
I'm wondering that too - same circumstances. The rest of the paint is great, but the bumper has faded a little. I can't really see his avatar too well, but it looks like he has at least a '91 and up body style like me.
They all attach the same. To do it you must first remove license plate & reverse lights, then reach in and remove two 10 mm screws from each taillight. Now comes the fun part, reaching in through the taillight openings and removing the 7mm screws from the perimeter of the bumper. The one s along the sides are easy to do but the ones around the perimeter you will be working totally blind. Before you start, lay a strip of masking tape along the body/bumper seam on the body side, as you remove screws mark on the tape where they are, that way you will be able to find the location of the holes on re-assembly. I've done mine and if I had to do it again I would paint it on the car.

I removed my rear bumper and it took a few hours and a few cuss words to get it off. I took mine off because im repainting the entire car and i didnt want any edges. I wanted the paint and clear to go completely around the bumpers. If your going to just paint the rear bumper maybe it would be good to leave it on so that they can blend the color in. If not, you might have a slight variation in colors between the bumper and the car. I would also do what the last person said and clearly mark where each bolt went. If you take the bumper off be prepared to replace rusted or broken bolts/nuts etc.
