Default Cruise control doesn't work

The cruise control in my 86 doesn't work, where do I start?

I'm not very mechanically inclined so use small words please

The brake switch can get out of adjustment, try holding up on the brake pedal with your toe as you try to engage the cruise on the road, if it sets the brake switch will need to be adjusted.
If it still will not set, check all fuses and verify manifold vacuum is present at the cruise servo (located above battery) You will likely need a Factory Service Manual if the checks mentioned fail to get it working, good luck.

Start with reading these and see if you can follow the diagnostic steps.

All of the vacuum hoses, especially under the hood to/from the cruise control module

Don't forget about the check valve near the base of the distributor.
Should let air in towards the engine in the normal vaccum direction, but not in the opposite direction.
