Well just about ready to put my 87 coupe on the road to see what I have and how much more money I will put in it this year. My emergency brake is not holding and I want to look at the pads. From what I am seeing it looks like I have to remove the pads and also the center bearing nut to remove the rotor. Is this correct? Looking at the book it shows you can pull them and leave the Bearing housing there. I don't see how looking at it. Ok can some straighten me out on this procedure cause from some reason I feel like I am miising something here. Thanks for any help.
You can just remove the wheel and unbolt the caliper and pull it up off the rotor to inspect, repair or remove the pads. The caliper will still be somewhat attached by the parking brake cable and brake hose line. Use a small piece of rope or metal coat hanger to support the caliper once it is dismounted so that there is no extra load on the bake hose while you do your inspection/repair/adjustment. No need to remove the nut or rotor you describing. Have fun.
Maybe I didn't make it clear, but I want to look at my emergency brake shoes and not my regular rear brakes. Can I access the emergency brake shoes without pulling the whole hub. I have had the caliper off and still can't see the emergency pads. Also took the three small bolts out of backing plate and still no access. Hopefully this is a little clearer. Thanks for any help

I think what the previous poster was suggesting is that there are not extra brake pads/shoes for the emergency brake, but it actually uses the regular brake pads via a cable to the caliper which activates the pads.
Not sure about your 87, but on our 94, that is the way it is, only one set of pads per wheel, which are used for regular braking and for the parking brake.
On the 87 there are seperate shoes that look like they expand against the inside of the rotor. I try to adjust them and it seems to do no good that is why I want to look at the shoes. Just means like you have to take everything off even when the book says you don't. Just wondering if anyone has done this before and the steps they used. I see no way short of pulling everything out. Thanks
I have an 85 and have had the rotor off to try to replace the pads. Looks like you will have to pull the axle hub nut to me to access all that you need to. I bought all new hardware too so thats why I think it would be alot easier to do this. I didnt have a big enough socket to remove the axle nut so I stopped at that time. I am going to tackle it maybe this week so if you get yours done and have any tips, post them here. I will do the same.
I have an 86, and 87 is the same , I think. You just pull the rotor off, no pulling hub, or even the nut. you remove the caliper, and remove the rotor. THAT IS ALL. you may have to adjust the e brake shoes, to clear the rotor.
