Well lets see, is Dad's a 35th as well or is that Dad's car? You posted in C4 so I would guess Dad has a C4? So that narrows it down to 84 to 96, but still need to know what trans is in Dads car and what year? :jester

You can use plain ol' tranny fluid. I WOULD, however, recommend using MOBIL 1 sythetic ATF ... because it can withstand much higher temperatures before it starts to bubble up (which causes problems).

If you're going to just drop the pan and change the filter as well, then I THINK you're only going to be able to replace something like 5 qt's of it (out of around 10-12 i think .. can't remember). What i did was put 5 qt's of Mobil 1 ATF in to help balance it out. I did check the dip stick later on and noticed no bubbles after that.

What's it mean when the fluid starts to bubble? What bad things can happen?

When I changed the fluid and filter I installed a drain plug. I drove it a few times, drained it and refilled it. This gets more fresh fluid in the tranny and converter without paying to have it flushed.

When tranny fluid gets hot, it too boils and causes air bubbles. Because the transmission shifts by using liquid pressure, air bubbles will hurt it. Air compresses too much and also doesn't lubricate (the other purpose of tranny fluid)

yup, redline is a great product. That would be an equal alternative to the Mobil 1 ATF.
