what are good free+cheap first mods? just basic stuff, nothing wild.

Cut open the air cleaner lid and get a K&N, bypass the TB coolent lines, maybe a set of muffler elims if you want a better sounding exhaust. 160 Tstat and some way to turn the fans on sooner... after that, things get pricey :)

There isn't that much free HP to be found on an LT1. Open up your air lid and do the throttle body coolant bypass, combined they might be good for 2 hp.

none really, maybe .0x-.1 if youre a good driver. You really should do gears.

The above free mods will do very little, but they are free or close to it and will add up.. it's stuff that doesn't hurt.

Gears will give you the biggest SOTP feeling... but will run you 800+ for gears and install.

300hp at the crank, i think the stock gears are somthin like 3.33. Could be wrong though. You will want a bit more gear though, like 3.73 or 4.10.

If you are getting a six speed, just learn to drive the car, I've gotten my 95 6 speed in the 12's with no mods(open lid=0 gain, muff elims=loss of mph)

Where is nowhere? Gears are the best upgrade. Get 4.09. A k&n is just good sense, not necessary power. i'd put one in for peace of mind first as well as better air flow for later.

300 crank HP, and 340 crank lb ft. of torque, stock. The SLP cold air induction kit has just come out for the LT1. It's supposed to give you noticeable gains, but I have no experience with it. It's only ~$270.00, though, so it's hard to go wrong; I've heard that it installs in about 1/2 hour.

New gear is expensive. Since your Vette is a 6-spd, you might already have a 3.45. Check the code to see what gear ratio do you have. If it is GM3, it is 3.45, which is already good. Too big for the gear ratio doesn't mean better, unless you want to have serious upgrade on your engine. Good luck.
