Default Summit Protorque Starter Shims

Anyone know how many shims I should run on my 87? I really don't want to drop my bell housing to find out...

It depends on what kind of starter you have and if it's been rebuilt. I've been told that you don't need shims if you have a new starter. The one I recently put on my 85 is a brand new mini-starter and I didn't use any shims and it worked just fine. I guess when they rebuild them they remove a slight amount of metal from the mounting surface to true them up, then they require shims.

Once you get the car up to a workable height it takes 1 minute to drop the dust shield....and just a few more to unbolt the starter to have a look.....maybe a bit longers if you have long tube headers
there should be "0" shims on OEM setup.

I think I may just try it with zero shims.

This is the mini starter I bought,
