Default RE: HELP 86 corrvette fan and wiring problem

My fan caught on fire, I believe because someone wired it to always be on and they didnt put a fuse in the wiring, Now the wiring fried all the way to the two relays behind the battery. All of the fuses are fine and the fusible links behind the battery are fine, and the links by the starter. My concern is my car wont even crank and the dash doesnt work. The radio and lights work and the security light. Should I check the computer next any suggestions, I dont want to take it to a shop.

Sounds like you have a primary fuse blown. I'm not sure about an 86, but there is another fuse box on my 91 under the passenger side dash. Big fuses, kills car.

Also, check your battery itself. It might have gone flat due to the short.

oh... and pull that wire that is burnt up. If that is grounded it's going to do nothing but burn stuff up. In fact, check that first. It might be drawing so much current away from the system that nothing boots up.

You have lost power somewhere , the starter is independent from ECM ,which is also independent from the dash

Check all of the fusible links (8) under the bolt behind the battery. Almost all electrical power goes through a fusible link to the ignition switch.

is there any specific way to check the ignition switch or dash, do I have to tear the dash apart?

Check the underhood stuff first as the problem may be there and taking the dash apart may be unnecessary.

To check the dash you need to make a list of the electrical things that don't work, buy the GM electrical diagnosis service manual supplement which has a circuit diagram and diagnostic procedures, and trace power and grounds to all the circuits that don't work.
